I think the story to this game is that the Flames played as well as they did with pretty much 3 lines and Backlund a healthy scratch. That means they can add 4 new players to this lineup. There has to be 2 players right now in Abbotsford that can be called up.
You can expect some roster changes and trades coming soon.

"Backlund may not be producing but he’s a far shot from the team’s best 5th best defenseman."

Pretty sure he meant centreman.
I'd agree on all observations, especially:
-Colborne shows promise & played with a lot of fire, but did he deserve 24 minutes?
-Backlund has played hard every minute I've seen of him this season. Did he really deserve zero minutes? The Baertschi & Backlund scratches are bad precedents to set, in my opinion. They may not be tearing up the league but they play with a lot of heart & skill.
-With S.O.B. & McGrattan in the lineup I think Jackman is unnecessary, especially if he was only going to play 3 minutes.
I would add that pulling the goalie while on the power play, but before we'd established the offensive zone, was a careless mistake by Hartley. Hudler was awfully soft on that play.
As good as the team has played we're just way too soft in front of our goalie. Ramo killed our momentum with that weak goal, but the 1st & 3rd goals were on 2nd or 3rd rebounds in the crease, with Leafs players standing wherever they wanted. Man do I miss Robin Regehr from circa 10 years ago...

SOB is a POS. I was so mad when they showed the flames on an odd man rush then it stopped because he dropped the gloves. I know they scored on the pp but I think it would have meant more if they scored on the rush like that.
Jackman is terrible and as long as he's on the ice, we have a good chance of losing.

I disagree about SOB. The best way to protect your players from being hit like that is to show them you have someone who doesn't care about the instigator rule. SOB knows it's not that big of a deal if he sits.

Tough to lose a game like that. Certainly came to down to goaltending. Not that Ramo was horrible, but Bernier was awesome. Gotta like how we played though, we essentially dominated. Faceoffs remain an area where we consistenly lag against the opponent.
Also, I'd like to think that Backlund draws back into the lineup against the Wings.

Ramo has smallest and softest D-core in the NHL in front of him.

I think Colborn over Backlund comes down to size in a game where the head coach maybe overestimated how physical the Leafs would be. Also Colborn is the first Flame I have seen in years that's willing to stand in front of the net consistently and take the punishment. You aren't going to get that from Backlund although I would be lying if I said I would rather Jackman never suit up for the Flames again during this rebuild. He adds nothing especially with McGratton in the lineup. Re-signing him was and still is a big head scratcher for me especially when it appears the Sharks were actually willing to give up a draft pick for him a few years back. When you can get any asset for a plug at a trade deadline where you are clearly going to miss the playoffs you have to take that.

Jackman was put in over Backlund due to the Leafs size/scrappyness. I can understand the decision. You don't want the Leafs running us with only McGrattan to protect us. We don't have much size otherwise (Colborne, while tall, is not an imposing presence). However, it's a tough message for Backlund, and I would prefer his skill and learning to play with more "truculence". Don't like getting pushed around? Then don't let yourself be pushed around.
Colborne was likely given the extra ice time due to his recent play and Hartley's belief in the extra motivation of playing against a team that gave up on you.

If I had to choose between 3 minutes of Jackman on the ice, and 3 minutes of Backlund, I'd choose Backlund.

Im speculating that Colborne is getting the increased icetime to see if he can be a bonafide third line center, possible second line because we have a trade lined up for Stajan or Possibly Backlund.
They may not want to pull the trigger if he falls on his face.
My bet is Stajan has some suitors as a rental, or a salary inclusion if we take some salary back.

You watched the Oilers play? I would take Gio, SOB, and Wideman's grit over any of their defenseman sans maybe Ferrence who happens to be undersized.

At this point, I would be perfectly happy if we got rid of Jackman (I don't even care if we get assests for him) and Stajan.
Jackman, kind of like Glencross in a way, is showing that with the new makeup of the team he is a step behind and really has some terrible flaws. It was all good a couple years ago in the country club atmosphere to have a hard nosed guy like him, but now with Grats and our sudden ability to play aggressively right down the roster, I'm not sure how he is even earning a couple minutes a night.
Stajan at times has been solid for us, but I think it's time we let him go. He wins faceoffs better than most other guys on this team, but with the way Backlund and Colborne are playing, he's become entirely redundant.
Those are the only two moves I think we should be making right now.

Indeed. On the first goal he did nothing but stand in the net and on the third he flops to the ice and stretched out he still gets walked around. Useless.

Are you kidding me? You'd be a horrible teammate. What Ashton did, was about as dirty of a play as you can do in hockey , as a team you don't tolerate that kind of BS regardless of timing. It was the right thing to do. Good on SOB for breaking that punk's nose.
On a side note if Shanahan doesn't throw the book at Ashton , it'll just show what a laughable joke the league is. This was 10 times worse than Kaleta's hit on Johnson.

Yep on the first goal he had no rebound control. He should get replaced by Berra!!
