Ramo has played one good game all season.

Disagree. I liked Ramo's performance in both his wins, and thought he looked alright in Game #1. It could take until after Christmas for him to feel really comfortable with the NA ice. At this point, it is not worth looking for more goaltending help from outside the organisation, and I think it is still early to be considering a call-up from the farm. Ortio hasn't played enough games an Abbotsford, and Berra hasn't show enough consistency either way.

Gillies could be five years away from hitting his prime, but I don't think there is any chance that he does not turn pro in the next two years. He may even make the jump as early as 2014. Regardless, he will almost certainly be playing NHL games in his first or second professional season.

So threads like this are difficult to swallow.
People talk about sv%. Ramo has been ok this year at times, but the first goal, he was on his butt, the 2-0 goal can't get through, and the 3rd goal, he drops the rebound right on Raymond's stick by the post. It's rarely fair to expect a shutout, and he had some big saves, but if Kipper is in net, this may be a 2-1 win.
Fair tonight, but generally Sv% is meaningless. Toronto is of late always outshot. The lowly Oil outshot them. Low quality shots and a horrible team effort. Calgary out shoots them with far higher quality chance of success than the Oil showed last night. Two very different games. The Flames were the better team tonight, but the Leafs were definitely better than the Oil last night. Lousy compete and inconsequential shots resulted in statistics that flattered the lousy Oil. I could have stopped the Oil's shots last night as they were low risk, but the Flames were comparitively dangerous

- Tom Barrasso won the Calder and Vezina when he was 19 (started the season as an 18 year-old).
- Grant Fuhr won his first Stanley Cup at 21.
- Patrick Roy was 20 when he won his first Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy.
- Martin Brodeur won the Calder as a 21 year-old, and won his first Cup the following year.
- Jim Carey won the Vezina as a 21 year-old.
- Steve Mason won the Calder as a 20 year-old.

Oh, so that's what Jim Carrey was doing before Ace Ventura!
But that's interesting.. Seems these days though that experts don't label goalies mature enough to handle starter duties until age 25-27.
Nearly forgot about Mason.

I believe Gillies is a big fan of Quick, and I could see him following a similar path.
Quick played 2 seasons of College hockey, then turned pro. He spent most of his first pro season in the ECHL, with some time in the AHL, and 3 games in LA. He started his second pro season in the AHL, but was LA's starter by Christmas of his second pro season.
Gillies is actually ahead of Quick's pace already. Gillies started College at 18, Quick at 19. Gillies was his team's starter in his freshman year, only missing the games played while he was in Russia for the World Jrs. Quick played less than half his team's games as a freshman, and didn't become the starter until his sophomore year.
I wouldn't be surprised if Gillies has taken the starter's job in Calgary before his 22nd birthday (January 22, 2016).
As for the actual topic of the thread, I still think we'll see Berra get a call-up before the end of November. Starting Friday, they play 5 games in 8 nights, four on the road, so that might be a time to give him some action without the microscope of playing in front of a home crowd.

Gillies is a HUGE reason why Providence has jumped up to the #3 ranking in the USCHO. He puts up insane numbers consistently. I think, given his natural size, that his play would translate well to the NHL.
If management feel Gillies is the answer, and that he'll make the jump sooner than later, then I can accept a season of inconsistency between the pipes. If they think Ramo is the answer then I am terrified. He's shown glimpses of skill, but his lack of consistency is worrisome.

Ramo's bad goal did cost them the game. But the Flames aren't going to win many games scoring 2 goals - no matter what their goaltending is like.

Yeah this is my thought. Gillies is the future. The Flames won't spend a lot on a goalie just to act as a placeholder for him.

Ortio's numbers are damn good in the echl. 1.01 GAA, 4 games played, 3 wins, 1 loss. Doesn't look like Brossoit has played.

Pure Gold!!! It's funny whenever the Flames lose, the goaltender is not good enough and need to replace by Berra or Flames need to trade for a goaltender. We all know the Flames are in a rebuilding season and people are panicking right away. We got spoiled with their great start then suddenly we have to win the Stanley Cup this season. It's a rebuild and Flames will stick with Ramo and Joey Mac in goal. So far so good the way Hartley is handling except the benching of two young players we have. I have no idea what his reasoning and i hope he is doing it right and the guys gets hungry when they come back to the lineup. I know I am in for a long season watching the young Flames play this season. I don't expect them to win every game...all i ask for is effort and so far they are doing that. I hope the young guys gets more chances and Flames does not pick up any more veterans.

For me, the bold is telling. I think he will turn pro after this year - what would be the point of going back to be the starter for his team for a 3rd year?
He will also (most likely) be the starter for the US WJ team this year and there is a good chance that Providence makes a deep run in the Frozen Four. I also wouldn't be surprised if he is in the Hobey Baker conversation.
Point being, there won't be much left for him to prove in the NCAA after this season. I think he turns pro and quickly demonstrates that he is the best goalie in the system, playing his first NHL game some time next season.
Sorry for being off-topic.
As for when we see Berra, I would think they give these two at least 10 games each, then make a decision.

While I don't think our goaltending has been outstanding, swapping goalies is not the answer this early in the season. We just lost a huge piece on D for the next 2 months. We were woefully thin on D to start with. This may get ugly, but it isn't entirely on the goalies.
I am confident there will be posts complaining about Brodie/Russell and how they seem to be regressing over the next few months. They will be playing over their heads with way too many tough minutes. This will lead to goals against and losses. Doesn't mean they are useless, or that Hartley should be fired (or that we need a new goaltender). This is a weaker team, playing reasonably well, all things considered.

I think Ramo needs 20 games under his belt before we can make a decision on him. Right now he is a backup level goalie who is in my opinion equal to McDonald. So if after 20 games he is not looking like he is progressing into a starter I would waive McDonald, keep Ramo as the back up and bring up one of Ortio or Berra to try to get one of them 20 games or so before the end of the season.

Yep, some of the fans in here are going to require a lot of counseling before this is over....clearly some of the experts in here got sucked into the nice start.
Game threads are excruciating right now...I bascially go into them to see who is going full Simple Jack.
