Default Ice Time Question

With every game that passes they talk about Wideman being 2nd in the league in ice time.

I do not have a problem with him getting this much ice time but the coaches and Wideman have to be much smarter in the way he is getting the ice time IMHO.

It apperared to me that some players had absolutely zero left at the end of the game. Is this on the coaches or the players? You can say that you want your best players on the ice when you need a goal at the end of a game but to be out for 2-2.5 min shift in the 57th minute is not very wise.

When Bouwmeester was here he played roughly about the same amount as Wideman is playing now. The difference I see is that Bouwmeester was a much smarter player as far as changing goes. Bouw very rarely had a shift more than 45 sec.

How many times does Wideman play 1.5 to 2 min shifts? He was on for 2.5 out of the last 3 minutes of the game. Does this make sense? No wonder they were scored on.

I am not soley saying it is Wideman either. Hudler was exhausted and they put him back out when Ramo comes off and he has nothing left.

Like I said it is the coaches that decide who goes out but the players have to be smart enough to realize that like most teams 45 sec is a long shift in this league.

Is there somewhere that tracks shift by shift ice time and if so could you post it?

I love the amount of icetime Wideman and Russel are getting.
Cut some from Butler and give them to Smith and I'm a happy camper

Smith terrifies me just as much as Butler right now.

Bouwmeester was on ice for more GA than any other player in the league during his tenure here. Despite his ability to blend in to a well coached defensive system in STL, let's not idealize him here. He was an awful fit not suited to be a leader.

He is not missed and this is how Wideman, Gio and Brodie grow, but Gio is out for 6-8 weeks

Wideman getting more icetime/longer shifts means less time for the bottom pairing to play. And that's perfectly fine with me.

I do think we need to be careful with Wideman, but even moreso with Russell and Brodie. If all those guys are exposed to 25-ish minutes, it is bound to lead to more turnovers and more goals against (and more losses). We need more depth and the bottom pair to manage 10-12+ minutes without getting schooled. Not sure how this is going to happen without Gio. This is the part of the rebuild that will be tough to watch. We know the weaknesses, but there are not many solutions.
