Uber Calgary Car Service

Heard about this on the radio this morning. Uber Calgary is offering free rides in the city this weekend with a minimal donation!
Sounds like a potential neat solution to the taxi problem? Minus the city getting in the way...
Thoughts?

Haha, I just posted about this in the Car2Go thread.
Once again the problem with this service starting in Calgary is the fixed rate of $78/hour for a sedan service (which Uber is). Unless the bylaw is changed they can't operate here like they do in other cities.
Perhaps one of our more transit focused members can give us the breakdown on this situation (Frink, Bunk)?

I imagine the only reason for the high sedan cost in Calgary, is to keep the taxi industry's racket going. Allowing this would be a big shot at the existing taxi service in Calgary, and that's probably a good thing.
It has to be done at some point. We can't keep going with our current taxi system forever.

First Car2Go, than that FastCab App, now Uber. The old ways that the taxi companies here are used to are coming to a close, people are fed up with the waits.

A few friends of mine work at Uber.
I'm hoping this causes City Hall to look at amending the bylaws. It would benefit consumers greatly.

My guess is all rides are $5 for this promo period. In general Uber rides are supposed to be a little bit more expensive, for quite a bit more experience.

Yes right now all the rides are $5, and that is actually the donation to the Calgary Foundation they are doing.

Whatever eases the ridiculous wait for cabs on Saturday nights (downtown and beyond) is a good thing for everyone. I don't want to start a drunk driving derailment, but seriously, if you could actually get a cab on a Saturday night, less people would drive drunk.

Could a taxi zoning system work? Say the SW is zone red (red taxis) and those taxis will only work in that zone? Have several zones and then specific taxis that will go anywhere in the city. The idea would be somebody in SW needs to get to location X also in SW, this way they do not have to compete with the DT log jam.
Just an idea

Heck no! That would make the problem worse, as taxis would not be able to go where there's demand.

I signed up and tried this out last night. Nice simple app and had a car come within 10 minutes. Sure beat hailing a cab, and instead getting into a nice comfy sedan for the ride home.
Once I requested the ride the app showed the eta to me, very accurate. After the ride I received an email with a detailed breakdown of my trip, a map showing the route taken, average speed, total time, and total charge for the trip.
