Construction Begins On Tallest Skyscraper In Canada Outside Toronto
Construction begins on tower set to become Western Canada's tallest skyscraper
Quote:
CALGARY - Construction begins today on the Brookfield Place Calgary east tower, which will be Western Canada’s tallest building on completion.
The 1.4-million-square-foot office tower is the first phase of development on the site of the old Herald building in the downtown core.
The east tower will be 56 storeys or 247 metres in height and Cenovus Energy will be anchoring the development with a one-million-square-foot commitment.
|
Quote:
Development plans for the site also call for an additional office tower totaling approximately one million square feet, a 60-foot-high transparent glass pavilion, restaurants, retail shops and amenities at street level, and underground parking accommodating 1,100 parking stalls. A half-acre lit public plaza will traverse the site and will feature restaurants and cafés, public art displays, cultural activities and programmed activity provided by Brookfield’s Arts & Events program.
Partners on the project are architects Fender Katsalidis Arney and Dialog, and construction manager Ellis Don. The entire Brookfield Place Calgary project is expected to create 1,300 construction jobs and 7.5 million construction man-hours in Calgary, said Brookfield.

It'll be across 6th Avenue from Bow Valley.

It is where the old Herald building used to be. Across 7th Avenue from the Bay.

How lucky are we in Calgary that someone like me is already bored with this new tallest and looking forward to the Gateway proposal the day of the sod turning?!
Good times!

I live in such an O&G bubble, which seems a bit on the slow side for the time being, I struggle with understanding which industries will be filling these new buildings? Especially with a bunch of the EPC folk comfortably situated outside the core. I guess it doesn't matter as I'll assume the developers of all these sky scrapers are much smarter and more in tune with the market than I am. It is quite exciting to see such change in our skyline.
**Edit**And yes, I did read that Cenovus is the anchor tenant in this building. But when they leave their current digs, someone has to fill those spots. Like I said, it's great to see, but I'd be curious to see what sector (other than O&G) is driving this growth.

Cenovus signed for a big chunk of space in the first tower (1M square feet).

Doesn't this building also occupy the space currently occupied by the Bow Valley Parkade? When will that be torn down?

Not the first tower, it is going on the NE corner of the block, where the old Herald building once stood. The second tower will take the SW section of the block and the parkade will be torn down to build it.

This building, and the other ones that will be starting up soon, are for the most part, already leased.
Cenovus, for example, is taking up the majority of this building.
Shaw is taking up the office space in 3 Eau Claire.
Telus is taking up the office space in Telus Sky. (Taller building than Suncor Energy Centre).
A few years ago, Suncor Energy Centre (formerly Petro Canada Centre) had stood as the tallest building in Western Canada for nearly twenty years. 5 years from now, it will only be the 4th tallest building within 1 block of itself. (Brookfield Place, the Bow, and Telus Sky all being taller)

I'm on the 21st floor of the Suncor building directly overlooking the site. So pumped about watching it go up...until our view gets compeltely destroyed that is.

Too bad there is the Bow River shadow by-law, or we would have taller buildings in Calgary.
On another note, I wonder why no rich investor is building a super tall tower in Vancouver that is the tallest in the country...
