Heartbreak Ridge has the best one liners in war movie history.

I would agree, with the one liners, and Clint tried to save that clunker of a movie with willpower alone, but it was a terrible movie.

Even the Marine Corp who had been advising the movie basically pulled their support, not because it was bad, but the scene where Highway shoots a wounded unarmed Cuban was distasteful.

Me and my buddy were watching it once and they came to the scene where they had to go up the hill because there were reports of Cuban Armour. We both looked at each other and started laughing and he said in a great Clint voice? "What are the airforce pilots taking long warm showers right now?"

Stupid premise.

Full Metal Jacket for me and Das Boot a close second.

But K19 doesn't get nearly enough respect. It was an awesome film.

I thought it was good, I just don't think it was Ford's or LN's strongest work.

One of the best things in hunt for red october that really established things was Sean Connery talking Russian with subtitles at the start and the transition to english.

It made you believe it was a russian sub.

Cimino ruined it. It's a great story ruined on film.

My Dad worked on the set of Heaven's Gate which was Cimino's follow up. He can tell some stories of the craziness and lack of concern for budget by Cimino...and that's just from a lead carpenter (at the time) perspective.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is a good movie, but you can still feel the Ciminoness in it.

He was originally supposed to be an advisor on the film and Kubrick decided to cast him instead. Great decision and one that changed the course of Ermey's life forever.

He's in another called "The Boys in Company C". Saw it a long, long time ago. I'd like to see it again.

Three Kings?

Blackhawk Down was a much better movie, if you're going for a modern warfare experience. Blackhawk Down does such a great job of creating a visceral cluster @#$# experience.

Blackhawk Down takes a lot of heat due to controversy over the way the Somalis are portrayed. That's automatically going to result in the movie being excluded from a lot of "top 10" lists. A lot of the crticism of BD say it is "pro-war" or that the Somalis were treated as objects. BD came across to me as anything but pro-war. It questioned the involvement of the US in the first place. If anything the movie is pro-isolationist policy.

The Somalis are portrayed the way they are, because the movie is written from the perspective of the American troops. The racism they express is not portrayed in a positive way.

The ongoing themes of the movie are always "what the hell are we doing here" and "how do we avoid getting further invovled".

Small role in Apocalypse now as well.

I'll never forget his hilarious role as the gay football coach in saving silverman. He absolutely dominated that movie.

His list of decorations

Quote:
United States Marine Corps awards and decorations include: Meritorious Unit Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (w/bronze service star), Vietnam Campaign Medal (w/60 Device), Vietnam Gallantry Cross (w/Palm), Good Conduct Medal (w/two bronze service stars), Marksman Badge (w/Rifle Bar) and Sharpshooter Badge (w/Pistol Bar).

Eastern front movies have never been popular but I liked "Stalingrad" and Sam Peckinpah's "Cross of Iron" starring James Coburn.

Not really a war movie per say, but The Pianist is one of my favorite all time movies. Just great all around. The scene where he's playing the piano for the German Soldier is so tense, oh man. He could get shot at any second.

Shocked The Longest Day isn't there. I guess it might be a bit "documentary" but I thought it was well done.

I could watch Enemy at the Gates daily.

Private Ryan should be there for the opening beach landing scene alone. Most intense opening to any movie. I also thought the scenes at the US cemetery in Colleville were well done. Similarly I thought the Passchendaele trench scenes were well done.

I think this companion movie to Flags of our Fathers (which was good, but not as good), told from the Japanese perspective is arguably Clint Eastwood's best movies. It is refreshing to see a movie told from the perspective of one of the Axis powers and to see the turmoil that many of the Japanese soldiers felt during the battle. Be forewarned, it is completely subtitled, so unless you speak Japanese, you're in for a lot of reading.
I think you got that backwards. Letters is the Japanese perspective and Flags is the big Hollywood movie.

I loved both of them
