Hockey talks with Brian Burke and Craig Conroy
For those who weren't at the Flames Fest today:
Cliff notes for Burke:
- bought a house in Bridgeland
- successful teams work hard; this group have bought in and the coaches have done a wonderful job
- has officially moved into his job this week
- Anaheim scouts thought Calgary was 1st star of the draft (Ducks loved Monahan, Poirier and Klimchuk)
- Ken King made it clear to do what's best for the hockey team and not about the economics of having Monahan's ELC contract slide another year
- Burke's guideline for staying up was Monahan had to play at least 16 mins a night
- trying to avoid Monahan as the face of the franchise as it can be detrimental to his development
- Monahan made it impossible for the Flames to do anything but keep him
- believes in community service, says the first time a player will say no to community service the Flames ask him to do, the player will be on a plane to join another team
Cliff notes for Conroy:
- Abbotsford is a young team that makes a lot of mistakes but works hard
- Billins, Horak, Knight have stood out the most, also mentions they have moved Reinhart to the wing
- specifically mentions that some of them may want to play center but to get to NHL they may need to convert to wing
- Berra has done well and has made huge strides since first game
- Jankowski and Gaudreau are playing unbelievable right now
- jokes that the Atom hockey player that carries out the flag during the pre-game introductions is Gaudreau whenever he watches the game with Feaster
- mentions Arnold, Agostino, Gillies as having great starts again this year

If Kerr was going to go with argyle socks like that why not go with red instead of blue?

I can just imagine Feaster's face every time Conroy says that. Gold.

Brian is a huge addition to a stellar back office that has been assembled in the past 4 years.
Feaster = Cup
Wesbroid = Cup
Hartley = Cup
Burke = Cup
add to that 3-4 SOLID drafts with another 2-3 more... and an ownership group willing to spend... and all the cap space to work with, and another BIG chunk of salary coming off the books at the end of the season

Really glad Burke is on board.
And Conroy is always going to be a chatty Cathy. Glad he is running the Heat though and keeping a really close eye on the guys down there. And that given his comments, is fully prepared to be patient and let those players come around on their own time and learn the game the right way. Really good way to let the cream rise to the top so to speak.

Does anyone else find it odd that Feaster wasn't the one speaking to Kerr? I thought Brian was supposed to hang out in the background. I expect to see more of this Feaster subversion as we move forward and this becomes Burke's team.

Why didn't the Flames have this white jersey hanging up behind Burke and Conroy?

It's the only one missing, it should be placed after the horsehead black and before the 2003-2004 Red.

Regardless, as GM, you would THINK that he'd be the focal point of interest for Rob Kerr and Flames fans, and would be the likely candidate for discussing the affairs of the team.
I'm not saying it's wrong, just suspect that it was Burke there in the forefront with Feaster not beside him.

Because Ken King wouldn't have been involved at the jersey unveiling pre-Burke? Making something out of nothing.
