I think the Isles overpaid at this point. Great deal for Buffalo.

I bet the Islanders hope Vanek does not resign.

Vanek is younger and a better player, so my guess would be less than they just gave up?

I don't see the problem for the Islanders. They now have about four months to discuss a contract with Vanek. They'll find out early enough if he's interested or not. My guess would be that a few months alongside Tavares won't hurt Vaneks trade stock one bit ... so if he's not interested in an extension, they won't have a problem trading him for great value too.

I bet they don't as well. Use your imagination a little and envision that hyphen in your mind and I am sure you'll get what I meant.

It's nice that this was the first trade of its kind to go down this year, as it does set the market price.
Would earlier have said that no way Cammalleri gets more than a 2nd but now a late 1st is possible.
That said, would be nice if the Flames re-signed him to bring along the re-build for the next couple years. He has lots of good hockey in him still.

Moulson was a nobody when he played in LA, he gets picked up on waivers and gets to play with Tavares. I still think he will do ok in Buffalo, but he is going to miss Tavares

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 2m
Vanek's agent Stephen Bartlett said his client is "excited to be an Islander," but no contract extension is part of the trade.

Crazy. That's setting the bar real high for pending UFA values. With that knowledge now I'm assuming the isles are banking on Vanek thriving and liking pairing up with Tavares.

I wasn't suggesting that Cammy was better, but that is quite the haul for Vanek.

Hope we can get something like that for Cammalleri at the trade deadline.
Vanek has been a very frustrating player for the Sabres, never emerged as that complete player they hoped he'd become -- still rather one dimensional. I'd rather have Moulson...

Awesome trade by the Islanders, surprised Buffalo got so little back for Vanek.

Moulson is a UFA too, maybe one who was asking for a bit too much money
so assuming Vanek is worth an extra 10% production this year than Moulson + a 1st and a 2nd, it's not that big
I could see Cammy getting a late 1st or a 2nd at the deadline if he is playing well

Unless Moulson really hits a dry spell now away from Tavares, I bet that Buffalo flips him at the deadline as well. Buffalo did really well here.

let us not forget to mention
the Oilers were once willing to give up 5 first round picks for Thomas Vanek, 3 picks that ended up at number 1 (and all things being equal would probably have still been in the top 5 every year)
