Default Cammalleri - going forward

Why does everyone want this guy traded?

IMO he's the type of vet this young group needs for the next few years, possitive attitude, works hard and is the purest sniper on the team. And with Iggy gone he seems to taking on his leadership role seriously

Injury problems will probably help in negogiations but at 31 will want a long term deal for sure.

6 years.

6m-6m-5m-4m-3m-3m

4.5m cap hit.

thoughts?

Not at that term. Certainly not. Maybe the Cammi marriage is meant to last beyond this year, but it won't be at a term longer than 3 years.

I'm not opposed to him sticking around. The season has some playing out to do though. At the end of the day, you weigh his worth in terms of trade value against what he brings to the team come the deadline.

I'm not opposed to keeping Cammy for 4 more years at a good price. I'd be surprised if he didn't test the UFA market to try to sign for 5+ years.

Either way I'm ok with. If we get a high first rounder or we keep him, both help the flames.

I think it's safe to say Cammy won't sign for 3 years anywhere unless the money was stupid, and I think at best you get a late first and a mid prospect for him because of his UFA status.

I think he's worth more to this team than players that may never see NHL ice.

I don't think the Flames need him going forward. I hope he plays great for a while and we can cash in on his trade value. If he gets that kind of money, it better not be from the Flames.

Asset maximization. I would like to trade him near the deadline, but if he wanted to come back afterwards to a smaller deal, I would be all for him mentoring the youth.

I think it really depends on where we sit at the trade deadline. If this team is showing signs that it might be competitive sooner than thought, I would like to keep Cammalleri around. I'm a big fan of his. Sometimes rebuilds are successful sooner than they should be. I don't think we should expect that, but if it happens, we shouldn't fight it either.

If the team is bottom 7 or 8 and showing no signs that the re-build is working faster than thought, then I think we have to look at flipping him from a strict asset management point of view.

Tough call, I really like Cammy and think he'd be great for the young kids to learn from, but moving forward this team needs to get bigger and we already have Sven and Hudler as small skilled forwards in our top 6, and Johnny Gaudreau is just down the pipeline.

Although we could potentially have a lot of size up the middle with Monahan, Jankowski, Colborne, and Knight, I just don't know if you can have 4 small and skilled wingers with a similar skill set.

I think he's a good locker room guy and a solid top 6 forward but I'm not sure if he's going to want to stay in a city that won't have Stanley Cup aspirations for a few years. If he really wants to win a cup he will probably prefer to sign with a contender. If he can continue to play this way he will probably fetch a solid return at the deadline. I think that's the way to go here.

That's the thing. I can't see him wanting to spend the rest of his prime on a team that is doing a long-term rebuild. Where this team is in February will probably determine his fate. I expect that he will be straight forward with management about his intentions and will either be traded or re-signed based on his desire.

I think the Flames will have to choose between him and Stempniak. Moving forward there is only room for one of them.

Next season:

Baertschi-Monahan-Hudler
Glencross-Backlund-Jones
Galiardi-Colborne-Cammalleri/Stempniak
Bouma-Knight-Horak/Gaudreau
Mcgrattan

I think one has to be moved to give prospects a chance. Who do u pick?

If we get a first rounder for him it is unlikely that it is a high first rounder as only teams with solidified playoff position would give up a first rounder at the deadline for an expiring contract.

Even then I think it is likely that the return for Cammy would be similar to the Iginla return, maybe even slightly less.

The point of a rebuild is to build a stronger roster in the future by exchanging current assets for future assets. Anyone who thinks the Flames current prospect base will have us atop the conference in a few years is dreaming. Like every team, most of our prospects will be busts or marginal NHLers. We still need more picks and higher picks to outdraft our rivals in the coming years. The way to get them is by trading current assets.

We don't have to move out all of our vets. But I expect two of Cammalleri, Stajan, and Glencross to be gone by next year's draft.

This notion of getting a high first rounder vs. low first rounder is hilarious. As if the team we trade with has the option where they would like their first round pick to land.

I never want to see the Flames sign a player to a contract term longer than five years.

You lost me at Gaudreau on the 4th line...

I think one team to watch is Anaheim. If they continue their pace, I could see them being a buyer this year, and with two 1st round picks (their own and Ottawa's), they have assets to use.

Ottawa is doing ok, but not great. That pick could end up being better than the 1st rounders most contending teams can afford to give up.
