Here's what I found:

Doctor Zefram Cochrane was a Human scientist in the 21st century. An eccentric genius, he was the inventor of warp drive on Earth and became the first recorded Human to travel faster than light, prompting official first contact with the Vulcans.

Cochrane, eh? Is there proportionally more or less white people there than where you're currently living?

the wife and I just bought a house in fireside (phase 4) on a great south facing pie shaped lot. the shovel goes in the ground very soon and we will take possession in may.

we did a little looking around cochrane before taking the plunge and although it is small and quiet, we think we will love it there. she works at the childrens hospital, so a 20 minute commute is the same as now.

we love the thought of being closer to the mountains. from fireside to banff townsite was under an hour. the recreation centre seems great and there are good schools.

we can't wait to be cochranites!

I went to Cochrane in 2000 when I was 8. There was really good ice cream there. That's all I can remember.

i just wanted to add...

we just received an email from our builder, who is pretty much also the developer of fireside, telling us that a food store is likely to be going into the commercial area next to the tim hortons/shell gas station. that is huge news if it is a decent store, and could make food shopping pretty easy by avoiding going to downtown cochrane.

selfishly, i hope its a community natural foods. amaranth or blush lane, but anything will do.

Kind of funny... The original Killarney's IS in Airdrie. I have been the DJ there for 6 years on Saturday nights and big events. Now also the DJ at Cochrane on Friday nights.

I've lived in cochrane for 12 years.
Pros:
- Close to mountains. I'm in the mountains at some point almost every weekend so this is nice.
- I road bike as well, so being able to be on the hwy in 5 minutes is nice. No driving to edge of Calgary
- when there are celebrations they shutdown Main Street like the Christmas light up.
- we now have an original joes
- have a good thai restaurant and Indian restaurant. The sushi restaurant is decent.
- everything is close, except my job, which is in Calgary. I work eastern hours (6-3) so my commute is fast.
- farmers market is small but good.

Cons:
Windy as hell. I hate the wind now
I have a huge yard and garage for a lot less than I had in rocky ridge.
Can be quiet, but I like that.
We've made friends in town, but our Calgary friends rarely visit. We have to go to Calgary to see them.
Traffic can be a nightmare through town. I thought with the ring road that would diverge some of the large truck traffic, but it hasn't. By nightmare though it's on a small town scale, so it takes you an extra 5-10 minutes to get through town.

My friend moved out to Bearspaw when she was growing up. Her parents put her in highschool in Cochrane because it was closer than any city schools at the time. After one year of watching all her new friends become addicted to drugs and pregnant (maybe I have the order backwards) she moved back to a school in the city, where she recieved excellent grades and went on to become a successful Engineer. Not to mention 4 years of being one of the few female engineering students and getting to be so picky with the guys that she could hump the ones that showered at least weekly.

True story.

True story.

This girl is one of the bright up and coming criminal defense lawyers. Also saved a girls life during her speech to the recent graduating class. She graduated from high school in Cochrane

I lived in Bearspaw and spent my entire school career in Cochrane - well, aside from Playschool and Kindergarten in the Bearspaw area. I did not get any girls pregnant and didn't get addicted to drugs.

That's all I've got.
