I am split on the World Juniors:
On one hand, I don't think he should go to the World Juniors - for selfish reasons (help flames, don't get hurt, Calder potential, etc)
But on the other (and better), I definitely think he should go to the World Juniors - for his development (miss 4 games in the mid-season slog vs likely the most competitive tournament in hockey outside the NHL playoffs)

Good move!! He's been playing big minutes the last few games already so why not. It would be different if Hartley is only giving him 5 or less minutes a game. Monahan is matured for his age and seems to be eager to learn and improve. Getting some good goals definitely helps his confidence too. I just hope the fans who adores him right now while doing well don't turn their back or start hating him when he does not produce. I've seen and read it here in CP...one year the guy is freaking awesome and the expectation to produce goes so high. When he doesn't produce on people's high expectation, the guy is a bum and pretty much everyone wants to trade him. Some names I can mention... Backlund, Ryan Howse, Dion Phaneuf and even Sven Baertschi.

Yes, it is unsustainably high, and regression is almost certainly inevitable. However, streaks happen, and he's had one.

He's averaging 2.33 shots per game, if he keeps that up - entirely reasonable to expect - over the remaining 73 games he'll take 171 shots. If, from today, shoots the NHL forward average of 10.5% that's 18 goals - resulting in 24 goals on the season. If he outperforms the NHL average, he'll obviously exceed that mark.

Huberdeau won the Calder with 14g 17a last year. (Pro-rates to 23g over 82 games)
Landeskog won it with 22g 30a in 2012
Skinner had 31g 32a in 2011.

The way he drives hard to the net & mixes things up in the crease means he gets 2 or 3 legit scoring opportunities a game. His shots aren't just puny floaters from the hashmarks, as some other forwards' shots are. I think it's reasonable to expect a season-long average of about 15% conversion from him. He could have scored against Phoenix but was robbed by Mike Smith in close about 5 times.

It would be awesome if they billeted Monahan with Craig conroy... Couldn't think of a better guy to look out for and mentor the kid not just on this team but in the whole league. Might not happen but it would be a great fit. They could spend their free time practicing face offs. Lol

A 15% shooting percentage could be entirely attainable. If he shoots 15% from now on and maintains his rate of shots, it would result in 26 more goals, giving him 32 on the season. If Monahan ends up with that number I think everyone in Calgary would be ecstatic. I think 20 goals is a totally reasonable expectation after seeing his first 9 games and 30 would be the "wow" result.

Of course, if he somehow manages to maintain this pace and finishes with 55 goals I'll happily eat pubes. With mustard.

I think somewhere around 25 goals and 55 points (pro rated) should be about right + or - a few if he doesn't have a long dry streak at some point

It's really nice to see. I'm sure there will be bumps along the way but it is the right move.

For some reason I am reminded of Boston keeping Patrice Bergeron up in the same year as his draft and clearly that was the right move. Bergeron exhibited the same kind of talent and poise as Monahan is so that's a nice precedent.

That's an interesting comparison. When the Bruins elected to keep Bergeron his stat line after nine games was:

2g 5a 7p +5 0pim 1PPG 14shots 14.2%shooting averaging 13:27/game ice time.

The Bruins record at the time was 5-2-2-0

Bergeron finished the season with 16g 23a 39p +5 22pim 12.0% shooting
The Bruins finished 41-19-15-7, won their division and then lost in 7 to Montreal.

I'd say that staying in the NHL did nothing to hurt Bergeron's development as he followed his rookie year with two 70-point seasons and had 7 points in 10 games when he got concussed.

We can only hope staying in the NHL has a similar (though greater, let's be greedy) effect on Monahan.

Side note: Jones only got a two game suspension for obliterating Bergeron's skull on that hit.

Fair enough, but you're still basing this on a shooting percentage of 20%. Steven Stamkos is consistently tops in the league among snipers in this category and usually comes in in the high teens. Does Monahan really finish better than Steven Stamkos?

I really think a regression to low 20s in goals is reasonable. ~22 goals and 50 or so points would be a good rookie season. Let's not get too starry eyed here.
