Anyone notice that players are always linked to Calgary in these situations and not any of the other teams that passed on the player as well?

Not saying Jankowski won't be great pick, we'll need more yrs for it to play out, but Maatta was obvious or "conventional wisdom" pick there

Yeah he sure ripped on Feaster. It was like Pierre McGuire going postal on the Islanders for passing on Parise all over again.

Surprised Maata already made the NHL especially over some of the other D prospects the Pens have. The Flames have been somewhat of a joke amongst the media pundits and fans alike with their refusal to rebuild, Jankowski pick, offer sheet fiasco, Iggy/Pitt/Bos trade but I do think they are doing a VERY good job of turning that perception around.
Looking at what Hartley has accomplished so far with the team identity and the Flames getting a stud pick in Monahan. Subtle moves like Galliardi, Russel, Colbrone, Knight and brigning in Brian Burke all reasons for the perception shift.

Jankowski is only a month older than Monahan and did not look significantly worse than him in the development camp. Considering Janko is still adjusting to his frame and looks really good, I don't see how you can slam the pick. He's in the same tier of prospects that Monahan, Sven, Gaudreau, Poirier, and Klimchuk are, and skill wise, he's not the worst one of that group, at least not right now.

I would love Jankowski to have a great year, make the World Junior tean and have a strong tournament to shut these pundits up for a little while.
Klimchuk doing the same would be and added bonus.

Ryan Murphy is doing quite well in Carolina. 5 points in 8 games, and getting a ton of time on the powerplay. Likely never going to be a defensive stalwart, but he's helped the Canes be a small surprise in their division.

Really, the highest rated player that Calgary passed on was Tervainen. That will be the guy that I will always kind of compare the Jankowski pick to.

i'm completely happy with the flames drafting thus far. "conventional wisdom" doesn't mean good drafting.
i'm willing to bet jankowski becomes something in the NHL. Even if he doesn't pan out, i love the thought process behind making the pick.

I just don't understand why they didn't take Maata, he was highly touted and he's a D which the Flames dont' have much depth at. I hope Janko pans out but Maata just looks really good. (most of us wanted him in the Iggy deal)

To be fair, at the time the depth at center was absolutely awful.

If you're looking at it that way, wouldn't it be Tervainen vs. Jankowski and Sieloff?

Why is that? The "conventional wisdom" pick of last years draft at #6 was Monahan. Could you imagine if Feaster went off the board again and picked some relatively unknown kid, while Monahan fell to the Oilers? So why is it ok for Feaster to go off the board with the 2012 pick, when the conventional pick is already in the NHL on a very good Penguins team? Plus Maatta is a defenceman, which the Flames are sorely lacking in their development system
I never liked the Jankowski pick from the start, this just makes it worse

I've been saying that for the past couple of years. Flames could have had Maatta in today's lineup instead of either SOB or Butler and instead have a guy college that projects to be a Joe Colborne type center that the Flames just attained for a 4th round pick. Maybe in a few more years the Jankowski pick looks better but certainly not today, this season or probably next season. That pick's on the golden boy Weisbrod.

It's because the Flames were the team in the first round with the biggest reach according to most scouts and teams.

It should be noted that Sieloff looked really good in pre-season too and was one of the last cuts made. I would be shocked if we don't see him with the big club at some point this season.

Pretty interesting that of the 13 dmen taken in the 1st round of the 2012 draft, 6 of them are already with the NHL team that drafted them (Dumba decision still to be made).
