Roger Millions ‏@RogMillions 15s Monahan agreed to staying with billets. Shows his maturity and solid upbringing. Quality kid who has earned this opportunity.
Moving into a bigger house right now, he can stay with me.
I'll drive him to work, if he can get me free tickets.

Woohoo! Going to make watching this year be so exciting regardless of the results! (Also means I'll get to see him again when he comes back to LA )

Can someone point me to an online place where I could get an away jersey with his name on it?

Cheers

I like the fact that he has to stay with an NHL vet. It's what the bozos up north should have done.

I know we've been getting points this season, but pretty much every decision right now should be towards the betterment of the young guys, and not to the Standings. The WJC's will be another great learning experience for Monahan... they definitely shouldn't prevent him from getting it just because they might get an extra point or two out of it. He'll have the rest of the year to get the NHL experience.
I'm in agreement with you a bit here, I think Roger is out to lunch with his value to the team comment. Monahan should stay or go based on what's best for his development not his "importance" to the team. If he didn't show he was an NHL level player, he should have been sent back, not because we lack centre depth or anything.

But unlike you I'm not convinced playing in the World Juniors is better then the meaningful minutes he's playing in the NHL right now. Even playing against middling NHL players is a higher level of competition then elite junior guys. The pressure he felt the past month trying to make the NHL is probably higher then what he would feel going back down to a junior tournament.

I know we all love to watch the World Juniors each holiday season but if Monahan is playing well in the NHL and doesn't need a little shot in the arm, keep him in the NHL. Sending him back to juniors, even for two weeks for this tournament, is a step down in every way. I really don't like the idea of Monahan doing all this development, raising his game to this level, to have to readjust to a lower speed game just so us fans can enjoy him playing there.

The World Juniors is nice but it has shown to not mean much when it comes to development.

I agree with your sentiment, not sure I agree going to the WJC's is key to his development. I won't pretend to know what's better, but going to the WJC is taking a step down in competition level from the day to day in the NHL. I don't think you can blanketly say going is going to be what's best for Monahan, it's likely a case by case basis, and very much dependent on what each player needs.

Who's to say whether it is or isn't. Sure there are players who played in the WJC who never amounted to much but I can find just as many, if not more, who did.

His development certainly won't be hurt by playing in the WJC and missing 4 Flames games. Let him play.

I'm not expert but I'm certainly open to being convinced. We've seen just as many guys make the NHL who never got close to the World Juniors and guys who've made the team not amount to anything.

TJ Brodie never made the team, he's a bonafide NHL'er
It hasn't seemed to help Leland Irving or Greg Nemisz much.

Not maybe, but I think it's pointless. He'll be taking a step down in competition, then he'll have to come back to the NHL and adapt to the higher paced NHL game once again. The only reason I've seen from you, and it's not a legitimate one, is you want to see him play. It's a fan reason.

While I agree you learn more by playing against higher competition, I don't think the WJC is long enough of a break to really have much of a downside. How many games do players miss by going to the WJC, 3-5? He'll have 75+ games to get the NHL experience and do all the things you mentioned. He can spare the handful of NHL games to do something he will never get the chance to do again (at least not until he makes the Olympics!).

At this point, putting him in different learning situations and roles will help round him out. In Calgary, he can learn how to be an NHLer, and in the WJC's he can learn how to play in big pressure games against other elite young players. I don't really see the downside.

I think it depends on how the Flames are doing at that point. If he is playing well and they are still close to or in a playoff position, I think keeping him is better for both his development and for the Flames.
