If I may add as well, it feels a little to hick for me. So you may want to consider that as well if you feel like you're more of a big city urban kind of person. I like that ice cream there though.

My thread on it from a few years ago...

We decided to stay in Calgary, but I still get the itch to try Cochrane out every once in a while.

Yeah, the ranches are definitely more expensive, and in that budget, probably not realistic. But having said that, I'm not sure how a suburban-style neighborhood in Cochrane is better for you compared to any other place in NW Calgary.

You say your main reason is to be closer to the mountains..I assume to save some time. Lets say it shaves 20 minutes going to the mountains and you go there one a week....then you save 40 minutes every weekend. BUT you lose 40 minutes every day by going back and forth to work in Calgary, compared to living in a NW neighborhood. So that's almost 200 more minutes of driving a week to be a little closer to the mountains on the weekend? And that's assuming you never go to Calgary outside of work...which I kind of doubt.

Obviously we all have different priorities though, so that might be worth it for you. I do like driving that road, ha.

I had to drive from Downtown to Cochrane to pick something up and then back downtown for a Flames game one day.

I wanted to shoot myself in the face after.

Instead I refueled my car. And then found the nearest pisser.

Yeah, I don't think it would be a terrible commute... but I still don't see the benefit of doing it compared to a NW neighborhood unless there is some added country bonus. Unless Cochrane is a lot cheaper than the NW...which it may or may be, I'm not sure.

If it currently takes you 25min to commute to work every day, that's 50 minutes a day for a round-trip If you move out to Cochrane, that's probably going to swell up to 1 hour commutes which is 2 hours a day you lose driving back and forth

That's 10 hours each week that you are driving to save a 40 minute trip to the mountains on the weekends. That's 520 hours a year / 22 days you are spending in your car driving to work each year.

If there's one piece of live advice I try to give people, it's try to move closer to work because you gain so much of your life back. No location is worth spending what is literally years inside your car commuting to work over the span of your career.

I'd still say that's about a 30-35 minute drive compared to somewhere else in the NW that might be 10-15.

You're still at Northland VW right?

I would say it's 25-30 mins from either side of Cochrane to your work.

Northland VW? Why not move to the NW? Lots of nice suburban neighbourhoods there if you are tired of condo living. You could get some nice suburban 60s era lots/homes in Varsity, etc. which are awesome after renovation and if you change your mind and want to go back to Condos, there are a lot of newer developments starting up there (University City, Varsity Gardens). You could walk/bike to work every day and you are close to both TransCanada and Crowchild which makes trips to the mountains only take marginally longer than if you lived in Cochrane.

Nah, that's when you justify buying yourself a nicer car since you spend so much time in it. Heated and cooled seats with built in massagers. Embrace the hedonic treadmill.

I'm not even sure if getting to the mountains from Cochrane would be faster then living in the NW. I know anytime I've headed out that way taking Stony or getting on the Trans Canada asap is a heck of a lot faster then that slow moving Bow Valley Trail through Cochrane. Even if you take 22 south you still won't be saving time.

It's settled, you're moving into a home in a yob-gobbling NW community. Congrats!

LOL

If you are a car or motorcycle enthusiast, HWY 1A is like heaven. I usually bypass the 1 for the 1A just for the fun factor.

Sincerely,
Yop-Gobbler.

FWIW, my sister says there is a turn signal from 22 south to 1A west now that has improved the flow there, as well as there are planned improvements coming to the intersection. She actually doesn't drive the intersection herself though.

Honestly, that's the best reason for living in Cochrane.
