Classy guys. I think you all need to take a break from the internet and go kick a puppy or something.

People can be D-bags after a loss.

He had 0 points, was a -4 and had 15 penalty minutes after 9 games. I doubt he would have stayed in Toronto if Burke had joined the Leafs a month or so earlier.

Monahan is currently the Flames leading goal scorer, and second in points. He's top 10 league-wide for goals and only 3 goals behind Ovechkin in first place, so it's a very different situation.

I agree. A lot of people expect him to get traded to a contender if he goes back, but if he is, it's not likely to happen until near the OHL trade deadline. He would play the bulk of the year with an awful team.

Also, from that perspective, the Flames could send him down, and he could get traded to a team other than London (who are guaranteed a Memorial Cup berth as the host team), and if that team gets bounced early in the OHL playoffs, he'd be available to the Flames at the end of the season, and he'd play one more game and trigger his ELC anyway.

Schenn has survived in the NHL on mostly physical attributes alone, he's a stay at home dman with very little in the way of hockey iq.

Comparing him to Monahan is nothing short of stupid, that's just my opinion as Monahan appears to not only be physically capable of handling NHL duties but he clearly has an excellent hockey iq.

I may be miss-reading, but it sounds to me like your dad is referring to sophomore slumps - and there are plenty of those.

There has been the occasional 19 year old come along and have a good year, only to die out - it's going to happen once in a while (sorry, can't thin of any examples off-hand), but not very often.

Sophomore slumps are far more common though - and they are no big deal. Typically, there is no pressure on a kid, they're on a high, and they just come in and play. Then in their second year, they have expectations and responsibilities, and suddenly things get tougher.

But as long as they continue to develop beyond their second year, it isn't a concern.

He will stay up imo but has a lot to work on. Sure he is getting points because he is great at finding the open spots, but away from the puck I see a lot of things that he needs to work on.

His puck pursuit is lacking in many regards, this is a big flaw in his game that I see right now, he is not aggressive enough going into the corners to get the puck, yes he is a centreman but they still have to go to the corners. I saw a lot of times the last little while where he is the first man in the zone and that aggressiveness that you need to be successful in this league is not there. He needs to kick it up a notch with his skating as he is often seen floating too much on back check and into corners where he should be making a hit to try to get the puck away from the opponent. If he were as aggressive as #47 then this line would be something special but he isn't and that needs to be worked on. Is it because he is tired, too long of shifts(Maybe), being worn down by opponents because of strength advantages, I don't know but it is a glaring hole in his game to me at this point.

His shot is A+, his ability to find open ice is A+ and his use of his stick in front of the net to get the puck is A +, defensive responsibilities B-(too long of shifts at times leaves him winded and not able to keep up to puck pursuit in his end), so don't think I am down on him at all, just that I see one spot where he really, really needs to work on.

Now, with all that being said, should he stay or go down? Wish there was another choice(AHL) but there isn't. The AHL would be the perfect place for him this year imo, while he works of strength and overall conditioning to get better suited to the rigors of the NHL. Going down to the OHL isn't an option and I think he will stay up with Calgary, but I think his ice time should stay around 15m in order to shelter him somewhat and allow him to get more accustomed to the NHL intensity. I also believe that Calgary should send him to the Worlds, it is a great experience that he should have had last year and I don't think his not being on the club for a few weeks will have an overall impact on where the Flames will end up in the standings at the end of the season, especially for a rebuilding team that needs draft picks(the higher the better right now imo)

Can we not send him to the AHL after a couple of games?

If we don't return him to the OHL and therefore negate his eligibility to play there, could we not say in 3 or 4 games assign him to the Heat if needed? I thought we did the same with Horak. Kept him at 19, didn't return him to Chilliwack, then in January sent him to the Heat to finish out the season.

The 9 games has nothing to do with CHL eligibility, it has to do with burning a year of his ELC.

Because he is a CHL player, the agreement is he must go back there to play. This is to protect the CHL from getting sacked by the A.

Nope NHL or OHL, that is the only options until he is of age unfortunately. I really think he is in that between stage, too good for OHL and yet has some things to work on to be a better, mor complete NHL player. He needs to play against men and the AHL would be perfect until he is ready later in the year.
