Seems like a just reward for the flames to get such a great player like Monahan after not tanking at the end of last season like all the other teams that finished below them.

I think this is more a case of the timing being perfect. We are without a true superstar player, and the world is his oyster right now. It looks like the Flames brass are just saying F it, and letting him have all the ice he needs to develop, and he has taken the ball and is running with it. Two or three years ago, we probably would have already sent him back to junior, or buried him in AHL purgatory. The biggest thing that is blowing me away about him is his maturity, and consistency.
I truly believe we are witnessing the birth of our new franchise player, and a future NHL top 10 scorer. It feels good man.

MacKinnon is definitely the better player, but 2nd might be possible. We won't know until at least 5 more years.

Could end up being the best, could end up being the fifth best. Doesn't matter at all so long as he continues to do well. I wouldn't celebrate at other teams' expense 8 games into the first season. Same goes for declaring MacKinnon the winner.

How do you know these things?
Do you travel time in a DeLorean?
MacKinnon had the better jr career. Monahan played for a horrible team most of his time in jr. I think its too early to crown the best player of the draft and way too early to say MacKinnon is 'definitely' a better player than Moneyhands.
Shame on you

Is he?
MacKinnon is going to be great, no doubt about it but when we look at the 2013 draft the only one I might be "upset" we didn't get is Barkov. I think Sean is going to be a better and more important player then MacKinnon.

Might your opinion be different if Monahan had played for the powerhouse Mooseheads and MacKinnon played for the sad sack '67s?
I do.

As Fire rightfully said, we will know in 5 years, at least..
Monahan looks and acts like the real deal.

I have to give credit to Hartley for giving him the opportunity. He is notorious for being hard on younger players yet Monahan is being given the chance to show what he's got, albeit deservedly so.

For comparison:
Jarome Iginla rookie season 8 games in:
3 G, 3 A, +2
Sean Monahan rookie season 8 games in:
6 G, 3 A, -2
I realize this is a small sample size and I would be very surprised if Monahan were to keep this pace up for the full season, but still pretty damn impressive.

If Monahan keeps this up all year long, he'll have 60 goals.
I'm pretty sure he has to cool off at some point.

You don't need to compare him to everyone else and set up fantasy races with other rookie seasons. I don't get that mentality. He's his own player no matter how anyone else does.
