Plugging our prospects into the lineup for no other reason than we are rebuilding doesn't sound at all like a meritocracy. Quite the opposite in fact.
Unfortunately Butler in his current state might be better than any other option we have at this point, as a few others have said in this thread already.

The last couple years I would agree, but so far this year literally anyone in the organization would be a better option.

Catch 22, none of the prospects have shown they've earned a call up, but Butler has shown that he doesn't deserve to play every night.

The Butler - SOB pairing isn't doing anyone any favors.
It's making both guys look bad, and making the team lose games.
I wouldn't say I have "faith" in Butler, but id say that I think he still has all the tools to put it together and become a solid 2nd pairing guy.
I'd give him a bit more rope, because he might come around, and having a guy of his age who can play top-4 for years to come would be really handy. But I sure as heck wouldn't have him paired with SOB, and I wouldn't give him any longer than the end of this season.

I feel bad for Chris and his family, who probably feel sick every time they read all the negative stuff about him.
However, I get it. I fail to see why he should be considered an N quality d-man. He might be better than average in the A... but then again, maybe not. It's frustrating. The Flames need to start playing to win, and not just 'not to lose.' Having Butler in your core D group isn't projecting this aspiration, nor is it instilling any faith in the fans for a successful rebuild. My vote would be for replacing him with Breen (when he's healthy), whom I have always been impressed with.

That is totally uncalled for. I don't wish injury on any kid in any sport.

Yeah the couple posters hoping/wishing injury on him is pretty pathetic.
If a hockey player infuriates you that much, maybe try a different hobby.

Butler continues to lead the way in Blocked Shots with another 5 tonight.
Puts him 19th overall in the league.

I think he also has a record for seemingly on the ice for every goal against this season.

I thought he had a pretty solid game tonight (though I was keeping a closer eye on the UFC fight tonight). There doesn't seem to be any Butler-bashing going on in the PGT. Seems he did have a pretty decent game.

Butler is a marginal bottom-pairing defenseman on a marginal NHL team, with no clear better options. Is anyone honestly surprised that he does not look very good? I expect that this is the reason why he continues to play. Honestly, if all we as fans have to complain about is a bottom-pairing defenseman, that has to be considered a huge positive.
|
Yes and no.. I say yes because as you put it the coach is a lot more intimate with the player vs a fan that much is true. On the bottom pairing d man making 1.2 million, Butler this year vs last year, he was still on the fan's radar just not as big of a target as (for example) Bouwmeester who was making more but at the same level of physical play (none) and hockey iq (little). Can you really argue that we couldn't fill his spot with someone who is younger with less experience who at the same time will make those mistakes but will put forth a marginal effort?

From what I saw, he actually had a really good game tonight. If he could play like this every night I would be very happy with him as a 3rd pairing d-man. I didn't yell at the TV once because of something Butler did tonight!
