Well, I'll give Hall points for having the right attitude. However, the teams with "lots of skill" they were sticking with were the always inconsistent Capitals, and a Penguins team that pretty much half-assed it - and still won.

Oilers last year- Shots for:26.5 Shots against:32.2
-5.7 per game
Oilers this year- Shots for:24.7 Shots against:25.8
-1.1 per game
Its still early but there's huge improvement there. They have gone from terribad to the mushy middle.

When teams get up by 2 of 3 goals they tend to start shooting less. But you knew that right?

There are guys that actually track the shots differential both when the score is tied and when there is a one goal differential.
The oilers are doing much better in that area as well.

Wins be damned! The shot differential is getting better!
What's next, they may be 1-7 but they have less defensive draws then last year!

I don't think shots against is telling much of the story though in Edmonton's case. It's where the shots are coming from.
A few days ago someone had posted a graphic from Sportsnet, detailing where the opposition's shots came from in an EDM game, and a high percentage seemed to come from the high slot if I remember correctly. The number of harmless perimeter shots seemed lower than expected... however I don't have the stats on that sort of thing so my expectations could have just been off.
Anyone know where to find that stuff?

I think they should trade 1 of the prima donnas (Yak) for a more gritty 2 way young player. I guess it could bite them on the ass like the Hodgeson/Kassian trade for Van (maybe.... still to early on that one) but they should do something to change the culture.

It is actually TSN game tracker. Click on the game tracker banner on their website.

Yakupov until he proves otherwise is young player that is 1 dimensional and unwilling to learn or commit to the the other phases of being a quality NHL player.
Do I feel sorry for the Oilers hell no. There was red flags about this before he was drafted.

Show the oilers shots as well. Bet they had just as many. Then compare that to the Flames vs Ducks game last night. Anaheim gave up a 2-0 breakaway and look where Selanne scored from.
You rarely see a hockey game where both teams don't get some good chances to score. I don't think the quality of shots given up by the oilers is drastically different then other average to below average teams defensively.

Man I thought Eakins might turn the team around...
I know it's early but this team is a cold mess....
I don't understand why they even drafted Yakupov if they want him to play like someone he's not. Recipe for a guy booting back to the KHL...

32 goals against in 7 games kind of speaks for itself.

Flames Vs. Ducks
Flames Vs Canadiens
Calgary is porous defensively, but you can see that Calgary allows fewer shots against in the middle of the ice and the slot.
Even as a porous defensive club, the team limits high % shots against by keeping shooting opportunities to the outside.
Edit:
Here is the 5-5 shots for the Jets (white) and Oilers (blue)
You can see that the Oilers still give up an apparently disproportionate amount of shots low and in the middle of the ice while the Oilers' shots are more limited to the circles/outside, with many of the oilers' shots coming in lower percentage areas like along the goal line near the faceoff circles.

Arbitrary end point, basic stats, small sample size and all that, so take it with a grain of salt, but interesting none the less.
Jonathan Willis @JonathanWillis 4m First 53 career NHL games. Taylor Hall: 17G-16A-33PTS, -7. Nail Yakupov: 17G-14A-31PTS, -8. #Oilers
