He's right. The correct spelling is Koalbjorn.

I don't have an issue with the refs blowing the whistle when Winnik got hit in the helmet, but I do have an issue with him diving to the ice and then looking up at the refs

Veteran savy. Game within the game, so to speak.

I wouldn't think butt ending or attempting it would be that common at all. It carries a pretty major punishment even if you attempt it.
Quote:
Rule 58 - Butt-ending
58.1 Butt-ending – The action whereby a player uses the shaft of the stick, above the upper hand, to check an opposing player in any manner or jabs or attempts to jab an opposing player with this part of the stick.
58.2 Double-minor Penalty - A double-minor penalty will be imposed on a player who attempts to butt-end an opponent.
58.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty shall be imposed on a player who butt-ends an opponent (see section 58.5).
58.4 Match Penalty - A match penalty shall be imposed on a player who injures an opponent as a result of a butt-end.
58.5 Game Misconduct Penalty – When a major penalty is imposed for butt-ending, a game misconduct penalty must also be assessed.
58.6 Fines and Suspensions - When a major penalty and game misconduct are imposed under this rule, an automatic fine of one hundred dollars ($100) will be imposed.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).
|
I can't see guys trying it and hoping to get away with it since it's considered to be a big one. It's a double minor just to attempt it. Misconducts, automatic fines and league discipline if caught. You'd be far safer putting your stick in someone's face and trying to pass it off as an accident.

I think this play is being way overblown. The refs blew the whistle as soon as he was hit in the head and he started going down. It wasn't like they waited for 5 seconds, saw him rolling around, then decided to stop play. It was a bang-bang call, and I agree with it 100%.
Maybe I missed something, but it didn't look like he was embellishing anything. If he smiled it was probably because he was glad he wasn't injured on the play.
I don't care if it's a Flame, Duck, Canuck, Oiler, whatever.........if someone takes a puck to the head you blow the whistle. You don't wait for a while to try to see if the player is faking it or not.

I know I'll get ripped to pieces for this, but with all this talk about goaltending, I have to say that's one area I don't think we've taken a step back on this season in comparison to last, maybe even the last two seasons. We are getting very average goaltending, which is what we got out of Mikka the last couple of seasons, or certainly last year. Don't get me wrong, huge downgrade over what this team had with Mikka for most of his career, but I don't actually think the team is dealing with average at best tending for the first time this season, that transition happens a couple of years back.
Would like to see what Ramo has, but Joey's given us a chance to win each night, can't ask for much more.
Overall, Flames still impressed me tonight, different guys stepping up, team played hard for the most part, made it exciting and weren't even remotely outclassed. Wish some of the brain farts didn't happen, but this team will make its mistakes, hopefully they minimize as the season goes on.

Watch the replay and pause. He does that to a t. I don't care if we lost but no respect to the game in its entirety. That has less room in the game then fighting.

I doubt it happens all that often in the games considering how serious the NHL takes it and with all the cameras even if the res missed it we would hear about it the next day from TSN, Sportsnet or the league itself.
Even the TSN guys talked about how you never see it anymore and guys don't do it like they used in the 70's/80's.

Outside of one or two over the top comments I am not sure there is a ton of hate for the goaltending. Both guys have under .900 sv % which is pretty bad for a starting goalie in the NHL today.
I think Macdonald has performed as you would expect a back-up goalie to perform so far this season. He does enough to keep the game close enough and give the team a chance but more often than not doesn't make the big save and he isn't going to win the game for the team standing on his head.
The goaltending has been okay considering who we have in net but poor for what you would expect from an NHL pairing.

He has yet to be terrible this year. Most goals have not really been his fault so far.

good game, flames were a bit flat at times, and some miscues by the defense gave the ducks the goals they needed.
really liked:
- backlund was creating a lot
- hudler is the catalyst for offense on this team
- colborne's best game as a flame, heck maybe in the NHL
negatives:
- thought the d as a whole were guilty of a lot of mistakes this game, 2 resulting in goals against
- what the heck was jackman thinking? Hope he doesn't see icetime for a month for such idiocy.
down 3-1, against one of the better teams in the league, the flames won the 3rd period. All in all, good game for the flames.
This road trip, and the competition being faced, is really a true test on what the flames have in Monohan. Last night, the case could be made that maybe he should head down this year. It was curious to see tsn point out that he's playing wing in the d-zone.

His last season was not Kipper's best season, sure, but what we always got from him was solid rebound control. Kick that puck to the corner not three slot. J-Mac had terrible rebound control. As another poster said, the team does seem to play well in front of him, so maybe he's great at communication or something.

Yup. At first it was eerily similar in location to the puck Langkow took a couple of years ago. At first nobody thought that was anything until they saw that Langkow wasn't moving.
I'd rather have the ref that took the play seriously and acted responsibly. If, in retrospect, he thinks Winnik got one over on him then he can make Winnik's life a little tougher the next game.
