This from Elliot Fridmans latest 30 thoughts.
From 2005-06 through 2011-12, just three of 32 teams who were four points out of a playoff position on November 1 recovered to make it
http://www.cbc.ca/sports-content/hoc...l-yakupov.html
Pretty surprising stat about the importance of a good start.

Not what Elkins wanted to see. Yakupov is playing like he wants to run himself out of town. And when Oiler fans turn on someone, it will be him.

Well... you do have to be atroicious to be four points out of a playoff spot by November 1st.
(Although if the stat only includes teams that are four points out and not teams that are more than four or more points out.. its a bit of a wonky stat)

Great interview with Igor Kravchuk on @TSN1200. Scouting for Russian Olympic Team. I wouldn't expect Nail Yakupov in Sochi. #Oilers

Kravchuk on Yakupov. "If he's not going to change his game, he has no future. He has no team game." Pretty damning assessment. #Oilers

Forget trading Yak to another NHL team, the way he's going he'll be in the KHL as early as next season.

Why is Ales Hemsky still on that team? The GM correctly acknowledged in the offseason it hasn't been a good fit and it was time for both parties to part way at least a few years ago. It would be like the Flames keeping Rene Bourque and hoping that one day he finally turns the corner even though there's ample evidence that it's just not going to happen and he's the player he is. Trading him would be addition by subtraction IMO and not because he's a cancer or anything but because he's never been part of the solution and the Oilers are a bad team where he can possibly flourish on a good team.

No kidding. When your team sits you? That's one thing. But when your home country says you have no future? Wow.

Tough week for Yakupov. Russian Olympic scout Igor Kravchuk unimpressed with 64 right now. http://proxy.autopod.ca/podcasts/chum/179/16630/kravchuk%20on%20yakupov.mp3 …

Damn, man. What a week.
Healthy scratch twice. Your comments to the media have edmontons fans up in arms. And now it's basically been said you won't be on the Olympic team by "The Man".
Multiply this by the fact you play for the oilers.
Take his shoelaces and belt, for the love of all that's holy.

As has been pointed out before, this is the difference between the Oilers approach and the Flames approach (at least since Burke arrived). Coddle your prospects and give them everything they want, in terms of ice time, and this is what you get.
It's starting to look like handing the keys to the city to Hall, RNH, and Yak much too early is going to bite them hard. None of them play for anyone but themselves in terms of style and habits. They might care about wins (at least some of them) but they don't play in the way that will lead to wins and it's going to be very hard to instill that now that they've been anointed the next coming of the 80s Oilers.
As we saw with our stars, when you have guys who don't believe they have to do what the 3rd and 4th liners have to do, you have a huge problem and only trading them seems to have solved it in our case.

I dunno. I'd take Hemsky on the Flames any day. He'd be our best forward.

He has never had a team game. Again, this is why the pick was a stupid one to make for the Oilers.

I'm actually starting to feel bad for Yak. He's had a mountain of shat dumped on him this week. I guess that sometimes these number one overall players who've never really had much adversity or criticism of their game so far in their career hit the bigs it can be a huge adjustment to their psyche.

He's no better than Hudler. Only difference between their histories is their ice time because of where they were on the depth chart
