I would be ecstatic if he became a Linden-esche player. That would be a positive for sure. I believe he has a greater offensive upside however.

But I wouldn't be disappointed if he turned out to have the same career. All I know now is that he is the most talented prospect since Jarome joined us.

Yeah, if Monahan turns into basically Trevor Linden, the Flames hit a home run with this pick. Anything beyond that is gravy. Mmmm, gravy.

Especially when you consider that intangibles that Linden brought. If he focused on offense more, he probably could have been a more prolific player, but he developed versatility instead. If Monahan can do that, it would be great as it takes more than just goals to win a game.

According to Jim Matheson Oilers tried to move up to Carolina's pick to grab Monahan

- Now we’re seeing why the Oilers tried hard to move ahead of Calgary to get Carolina’s fifth overall pick to take centre Sean Monahan. They love their choice, the abrasive D-man Darnell Nurse at No. 7, but needed Monahan’s 6’3”, 202-pound size more. Calgary got him at No. 6.

Ahhhh, makes Monahan's early success that much sweeter doesn't it?

Nurse is probably exactly what they need, but instead they go for Monahan? Geniuses up North...

There's going to be a lot of teams that wish they had Monahan... But Edmonton wanting him that bad is all the sweeter.

They need Monahan type forwards as much as defense though. I find it funny how some Oiler fans are trying to compare Gagner to Monahan

Another name Lowe can put on his resume of "almost acquired" players.

Monahan is exactly what they need as well though.

The Oilers have a lot of holes in their line-up and a Center with size and defensive awareness is just as big a need for them as defense and goaltending.

“I really enjoy it right now that I’m not always in the spotlight,” said Baertschi, who wants to do his part to extend Monahan’s current streak. “He should keep doing that well, so I can just do my thing and relax and make sure he’s scores goals and keep him happy.”

So after how many years of rebuilding, they still basically need to acquire an entire team.
