John Lewis, a UK department store chain (revenues >3.3 B in 2012) predicts that Xbox One will prove to be slightly more popular. They base this on the software and utility the Xbox One launches with being of greater appeal to their customer base.

Impossible to say at this time.

Currently the PS4 seems to be winning the pre-order war but that becomes irrelevant once the systems launch and people actually get to interact with the systems.

What ultimately will decide this is who gets the better first party games, and if either can find a niche as more then a gaming system.

Well a department store does have better predictive powers than most of us provided they actually have an accurate portrait of what their customers do like and what drives their decisions. No idea if this chain does of course.

The games will only be the deciding factor for the hard core gamers. What Microsoft is banking on is what helped prop up PS3 sales....the other things not truly game related. For the PS3 it was a very good Blu-ray player and that did drive sales to the non-hard core gamers. For the Xbox one it is the central technology to the living room theme. If they truly pull it off well it can conceivably pull an entirely different demographic in addition to hardcore gamers.

And let's face it, many of the hard core gamers are going to eventually buy both anyways.

I don't see how this is possible. Even with the Xbox 360 launching earlier and having a far easier development platform than the PS3, Sony still caught up and now has shipped more machines than Microsoft. Now in this generation they both launch at the same time, development should be the same difficulty, the PS4 is $100 cheaper and it won the popular opinion battle. Plus the PS4 is launching worldwide while Xbox One is in select countries (and Microsoft doesn't even seem interested in trying to crack the Japanese market this time)

If we're talking about the US market only (and that article is only talking about a specific American retailer), then maybe the Xbox One might be able to get a slight edge over time. But worldwide I doubt it will even be close for this generation

He's not wrong though. The PS3 was largely considered an over-sized paper weight for the first few years. The only redeeming feature the PS3 initially had was it's blu-ray player. It's was a far superior and cheaper blu-ray player than anything else on the market. The Japanese market keeps getting brought up but they really aren't the factor they use to be. I doubt this generation will be any different from last.

Just tried to reserve a PS4 at Future Shop here in Toronto. They are not accepting any until the release date, while you can still reserve an Xbox One.

It's not a launch version but amazon.ca still has them. Can't believe we're just about a month away.

It's actually a UK retailer not a US retailer.

To the other points...it won the popular opinion battle with gamers who haven't really touched either machine yet. It has won thus far based on perceived specs but no one truly knows how the machines will perform and what other things the two consoles offer and how they will compare in those extras. Don't be shocked if you what happens is similar to the Wii when it comes to the Xbox one...that is a large contingent of non-gamers will purchase one for casual gaming. It might not have the initial sales (though it appears it will be closer than many expected a couple months ago) but the casual gamers aren't the ones that ones lining up for launch day consoles.

Also Sony just announced that the motion sensing camera will have to be bought separately for $60. That will then put the cost of a similar PS4 system at about the same as the xbox one. Out of the box xbox one will have DVR functionality among one difference and be able to have voice control from two different voices at the same time.

In the end what you are going to have is two consoles that give a very similar game experience and each household will make their choice. I've said all along that unless I somehow get one as a gift it will be several months before I buy either (or both).

$50 for a DS Lite is a good deal. It's the last DS that is able to play GBA games!

LOL - if developers are getting trolled already, I'm guessing we're going to be hearing "Xbox off" a LOT! (I wonder if "Xbox, format hard drive" will work? )

Just cancelled my pre-order for the Xbone. Nothin in the launch period that made it a must have. Killer instinct looks cool and so does Ryse, but nothing I must have the day it comes out.

PS4 order at least has a title I want on launch day (hello Killzone) and infamous shortly after that.

For me, Forza 5 is a must have on day one. It's really the only thing that's keeping my pre-order alive.

I'm tempted to cancel my XBone pre-order but the damn Day One Edition thing makes me want to keep it. Love/ special gimmicky limited edition things.

Not sure if true, or just anti Xbox rhetoric.

Yeah, CBOAT is quite a divisive member of Neogaf. Has had interesting claims that seem to have been backed up for the most part - but hard to take seriously given the way the "leaks" are made. Still, a lot of people put stock in his postings.

Given the comparable architecture and everything else being equal most people believe that the XBone is behind the PS4 in sheer performance potential. (In before the PS3 cell rant - yes, yes it was a totally different structure that made it harder to develop for initially).

The question is only if developers will use the extra power or if it will just be a "lowest common denominator" issue. I'd imagine that first party developers should be able to push the respective hardware the most.

My post a few pages ago (and my vote) is now invalid. I switched my pre-order from a PS4 to an Xbox One after much meditation on the issue, due to a number of reasons. Controller, Xbox Live, familiarity with the eco-system, Titanfall, etc. I'm still a little iffy on the Kinect but we'll have to see if it grows on me.
