Just because a team is bad doesn't mean they aren't close.
And I'm not sure what the off-ice indications are that you're looking for.
All the off ice stuff we are seeing now. I don't recall the Flames doing this much team building ever before in the first two weeks of a season. Do you recall any media stories about the whole team going to a players house for Thanksgiving dinner? Or a player setting up an event for the team to go skeet shooting?
I believe that it has been stated in the media before (by both Sutter and Warrener) that the Flames of the past years have not been an overly close group off the ice.
That for the most part the players would do their job and go their separate ways once the games were over. Hell we saw this first hand last season when Hanowski was left in the dressing room by himself post practice.
It's just refreshing to see management and players talking the talk and actually walking the walk in regards to building a team culture and identity for once.
I remember once the flames went to Butler or Moss' house for american thanksgiving on a roadtrip down south.
Yeah, 2011, they played in Detroit the day before US Thanksgiving and in St Louis the day after. Butler is from St Louis, so his mom invited the whole team over for dinner.
They lost 2-0 the next day (but went 6-1-1 in their next 8 after that).

It's not a big deal. I've heard the same thing from other players about previous iterations of the Flames.
Considering the timing (departure of Iginla, Kipper, Bouw, Tanguay), and who said it.... I'd say that's a very bold statement, and certainly not comparable to when players said it over the last 4 or 5 years.
I'm getting tired of the crapping on Iginla mentality. I don't understand why there's the need to tear him down in order to enjoy what's happening right now. At the end of the day, we're only fans. We have no idea what happens in that locker room, and the relationships that exist. We only know what others tell us.
Jarome gave us 16 years of his all for us, and he doesn't deserve to be vilified for the teams lack of success. Enjoy what's going on right now. Live right now. There's no reason to create stories to justify whatever belief you want to have about a person/persons/situation you don't, and will not ever know.
/end rant

I know we won't get points in every single outing.. but damn!!! it's so refreshing seeing this team stand up and care for one another. It's a welcome sight.

So really, it took tryptophan addiction to bring the old team together.

I've long said it was leadership behind the bench the Flames have been missing all these years. Bob Hartley is the one putting these team building things together, even during the season. Hartley is the real reason this group seems to tightly knit, he is making it an active goal to bring the team together.

No.
For too long Iggy has gotten a pass because he's put up numbers.
The guy spent 16 freakin' years for the Flames and got us past the first round.. ONCE. ONCE.
Yet he made upwards of $50M dollars and booked the first plane ticket out of here, barely shed a tear and sold his house before he feet his the ground in Pittsburgh.
I'm not giving this guy a pass at all. He was a HUGE reason we weren't successful in the past DECADE and we are far better off now that he's gone.
Why do some posters go to great length to stymie discussion about some topics, like the change in leadership? It's pretty clear that the new leadership on this team is having an effect and that the old leadership well, maybe wasn't leadership. Why can't we talk about that?
Clear based on what?
Useless quotes about "how close the team is" that you hear all the time especially at the start of the season? Mediocre play in which young guys skate hard?
It is nice that they go to firehalls and skeetball/paintball outings but it doesn't tell us a single thing about the old leadership or really the new leadership for that matter.

Especially when a) The new leader is a guy who was part of the previous leadership group and b) It's the head coach and his staff organizing these events.

LOL
Yes the guy that when surrounded by talent playing with Team Canada not only thrived but won more often than not was at fault not the sub-par talent that surrounded him all those years.
Iginla hasn't "gotten a pass" he has got credit he deserved for dragging this team along, many times basically by himself, with very little help from his.
The one time past the first round says a lot more about the teams that he played with not the player himself.
And what exactly was he supposed to do hang around in Calgary and pout after being traded? He is a professional athlete and the writing on the wall that he was being moved was clear to everyone. He did exactly what he was supposed to do and thanked the fans/organization and moved on to help his new team. He did things 100% right and it is a joke that people try to rewrite that scenario to make it out as though he did something wrong.
