it's the best move. I prefer him playing big minutes in the ECHL to being limited to a few games behind Berra or Ortio in the AHL. Next year, with MacDonald probably gone, he can make the transition to the AHL.
I dunno about MacDonald being gone next year. I think his game is actually quite good. In the event Ramo doesn't pan out, or Berra can't make the jump, I bet he sticks around. And the odds of one of those 2 events coming to pass are probably material.
I went to school with a kid named Evan Evans. I also work with a french guy named Albert Albert Albert.

Back on topic, better to have goalies playing and developing than riding the pines. And loaning them out to another organization is a quick way to lose control over their development.
Ortio can't like this move at all. Seems like the writing's on the wall. Attitude issues? He hasn't even played for the Heat yet this season and Brossoit has only had one exhibition game in Alaska.
I wouldn't be too happy about leaving Finland if I were Ortio.
With Berra playing so well it is more likely that Ortio will need some starts to stay "fresh" since it appears the back ups won't be seeing much time behind Berra.
This is my issue with Keeping MacDonald. The Flames instead of rotating starts in both the NHL (Berra and Ramo) and AHL (Ortio and Broissoit) and developing equally, have decided that the three tiered development system is more favorable. I disagree of course.
Saying that, I'm just a fan with no real monetary stock in these players.
Just sucks as you now have a log jam in two important spots because of one goalie.
MacDonald eating a spot with the Flames and Berra eating a spot on the farm even though he appears good enough to play up in Calgary pushing Ortio and Broissoit up and down between Alaska and abby.
Bah, whatever. I guess we will see how it all shakes down by new years.
or maybe get him some game action in Alaska before the upcoming three game road trip in three nights, when a back-up will likely play at least once
That's not it. Both the Heat and Aces play their next game on Friday.
Brossoit will likely get 1 of 3 games this weekend for the Heat, and Ortio will likely get 2 of 2 this weekend for the Aces.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Ortio and Brossoit swapping places every couple of weeks until the three-way battle in Calgary is settled just so that they both get time working with Sigalet in Abbotsford and don't feel forgotten up in Anchorage.

It's more likely that they were surprised by Berra's play as they were likely looking at splitting the time between them both more equally. The step down to the ECHL from the AHL for a goalie is not a huge thing so getting Ortio playing time is more important and having Brossoit up isn't as big an issue considering his age.
Ideally, if Berra continues his good play that he'll get recalled and Mac will be waived allowing Ortio to start more regularly in the AHL.

Damn, just checked out Berra's stats after 4 game:. 1.95 GAA, .933 Sv%. Nice. It'd be nice to call him up and get him in a few games, but we kind of need Ramo to take hold of the starters role 1st. Mac's been good, not great but I fear we'd lose Ramo if we put him on waivers to bring up Berra. I hope Ramo gets another start soon and can run with the ball.

Maybe they're going to wait another month and things settle a bit before shipping off Mac. I know Pittsburgh is needing a quality backup and judging by the looks of things, Biron won't make it to Pittsburgh.
