b) I think this is marginal, but his line changes are kind of lazy. He could have been gassed.
c) Just okay when playing defence.
At the Devils game my one hope was for a goal or assist and he more than delivered. I am a fan big time.

^ Plz no. That means Monahan is superior to Sven, do not want that. This is both Sven and Sean's team equally. Kinda like Getzlaf and Perry in Anaheim.

I don't agree that Monahan needs to work on his skating, when he wants to, he's possibly the fastest guy on the ice, from what I have seen.

I guess he's got a few more games to go before the call needs to be made. I don't like the Flames Brass PR chances if they fire him down and he continues to perform like this. The argument of burning 1 year of elc on this season is moot. If the kid is playing at an NHL level its where he will learn the most...nevermind the chemistry he is developing with Baertschi, etc. This season is starting off way more positively than my gut was prepping me for. Looking forward to Wednesday!

Having watched Toews when he first started, I can pretty confidently tell you that all the strengths you mentioned are the same things Toews excelled at. The only difference between the two out of EVERYTHING you list is that he doesn't use his size or speed the same way Toews did.
Toews wasn't the fastest skater, but he was a strong, smooth skater that went to the net constantly. I see a lot of that in Monahan.
I, personally, don't think they're going to end up being the same player, as of course no two players are alike. But the similarities are really there. Keep in mind that when Toews started he had played two years of college, Monahan is coming out fresh from the CHL. Similar ages, but slightly different paths.
If Monahan fits into a Toews like mold, it's a success. He is obviously not going to BE Toews, but he could very easily be a slightly more offensive and just slightly less defensive version of that mold.
You know, just as a side note.

I kinda see the Linden comparison, but Monahan has a higher offensive ceiling than Linden.

Linden had 110 points in 67 games his final season of junior. When he was drafted 2nd overall, it wasn't just because he was a character guy. He had 30 goals his first season in the NHL. I don't see any reason to believe Monahan has a higher offensive ceiling.

I think the Jackets were last at that time? Then the BJs lawyers would have gotten involved as well.
It doesn't matter how the Flames interpreted it. CBA clearly states if a player played in Europe once the NHL season starts and signs with an NHL team, then he would be subject to waivers. There is even precedent of that.
That's what happened to Nabokov, Svatos, Wellwood, etc.

There's no way anyone can know what would have happened, given it was a framework CBA draft with unclear language. Those that think it was cut and dried "Flames lose their draft picks AND O'Reilly" are merely parroting the opinion of the author who wrote the original piece claiming that.

He seemed kind of slow backchecking. However, he may just have been overtired.

Mike Richards had skating knocks. Maybe you are thinking of him? Monahan is more in that mold IMO.

I agree. I would use Mike Richards or even Logan Couture as a comparable to Monahan. Maybe a bit of J Staal. I don't think Toews is a horrible comparison, but not a great one either.

He seems to be in the right place at the right time most of the time, regardless of his speed & skating. That was mentioned a lot in scouting reports last spring/summer. His junior 'highlight reels' were SO boring, but consisted of him doing simple things to make killer plays.
He's adapted so well to the NHL pace so far that I don't see any point sending him to junior for development purposes. The best place for him to grow & hone his skills is right where he is now.

This is an official notice to the CP boards: Any user who brings up the Ryan O'Reilly event out of the blue without any provocation is going on my "ignore" list.
It's ridiculous that we're still talking about it.

110 points in 1987 was a lot different than today, Linden didn't even lead his team in scoring that year, hell even Calgarys own little toughguy Rob Dimaio had 91 points. Fleury had 160 points that year playing for the worst team in the league.
The list of NHL scrubs who had over 100 points back then doesn't make Linden look all that great. Good player but highly doubt Linden in his prime could get 30 in todays NHL and certainly not as a rookie.

You're right. No one knows 100% for sure how it would've eventually played out. And as a Flames fan, I'm glad we didn't have to find out
But I think I'd be more inclined to believe Bill Daly's interpretation of the rule over Jay Feaster's.
