If he wasn't going to keep his jersey number he would have been given a race car #, like Brodie's #66 or Backlund's #60.

Yeah, he has the wrong player highlighted in the third image. He put the star on Hudler, where Monahan is actually the player on the boards making the pass to Wideman.

So, Monahan is actually even better than he thought he was.

Talk about Hockey IQ.., comments from Baertschi who seems to have watched the play unfold in slow motion.
Globe and Mail
Baertschi,

“As soon as I got the puck, I was looking towards the net. I saw Jiri (Hudler) but then I saw (Monahan) back door,” said Baertschi. “We were just looking at each other and I was like ‘OK, there’s only one thing I have to do,’ get that puck right to him and there was only one stick in the way, so I passed it as hard as I could.”

Hard to imagine for a second that we would have lost our 2013 1st round pick (and 3rd rounder) if the Av's didn't match the offer sheet given to Ryan O’Reilly.
Talk about a franchise changing decision.

That's implying we finish in the exact same position, and after the lottery pick...

No it's implying we wouldn't have any 2013 first round pick, and we most certainly wouldn't have Monahan.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the number of The Eliminator himself?

We would finish in the exact same position because RoR would have been claimed off waivers.

No, The NHL would have claimed that he would have had to go through waivers, then the Flames would have said that they disagree. When the Flames' lawyers would have gotten involved, the NHL would have at the very least let the Flames revoke their contract, or at most, let the Flames do as they thought they could do.

There is ZERO chance the Flames would have given away draft picks and not gotten a player.

Remember, it wasn't just the Flames that had interpreted it wrong, other teams had interpreted it the same way. The NHL would have been forced to make good by allowing the Flames' out of the contract offer, at the very least.

It is true however, that we would not have had Monahan had we gotten O'reilly. And that itself is enough to be glad that Colorado matched, because Monahan looks like he has a higher ceiling than O'Reilly does.

While you're probably right #19 would be so perfect on Monahan, it's such a number one centre number.

And about all this comparison talk... Linden, Toews, Staal... all big number one two-way middlemen, leaders, capable of being "the guy". Monahan isn't going to match up perfect with any other player so I don't think there is a perfect comparable. I think any of those is interesting and fine.

There's no way you can be sure that would've played out.
You can write a long post all you want but that doesn't mean that's what would have happened.
I think the Jackets were last at that time? Then the BJs lawyers would have gotten involved as well.
It doesn't matter how the Flames interpreted it. CBA clearly states if a player played in Europe once the NHL season starts and signs with an NHL team, then he would be subject to waivers. There is even precedent of that.
That's what happened to Nabokov, Svatos, Wellwood, etc.

Just as a sidenote, I don't see the Toews comparison. While I am loving Monahan, I would have to say his strengths are:a) hand eye co-ordination.
 - can instantly strike a puck in anywhere at any height into the net.
 - instant reaction and control
 - able to strip players of the puck, intercept offence.
 - FACEOFFS!
 - can't believe how many of these things we have won this year. You forget what it's like and how important it is.
 b) puck sense.
 - seems to know where the puck is at all times and where to be.
 - seems open all day long even when surrounded by defenders.
 c) hockey iq
 - able to identify open teammates
 - able to deliver great passes that surprise teammates that can't receive

Things he needs to work on:
 a) needs to work on skating and forecheck.
 - skates to net which I love, but no need to skate there when you are the first offensemen in the zone. and defenders are playing behind the puck behind the net. Need to chase them.
 - drifting around for position, doesn't use his size or speed to force turnovers.
 b) I think this is marginal, but his line changes are kind of lazy. He could have been gassed.
 c) Just okay when playing defence.

At the Devils game my one hope was for a goal or assist and he more than delivered. I am a fan big time.
