We haven't seen one of these in a while, have to get it started again. Also, it is much more fun reading these now, you can really feel the optimism within the organization and the team.

1. Bouma's blocks boost Flames to win

The skipper wasn’t the only one gushing about Bouma.


Fans roared. Teammates, too.


“Credit to him, that was unbelievable,” said Mark Giordano. “Guys were tired and we had to collapse, and he basically stopped their attack on his own. Usually you don’t get momentum after a shift in your own zone for a couple minutes, but because of the blocks, because of the way guys were sacrificing their bodies … to get a standing (ovation) from the crowd was pretty cool.


“Definitely a turning point.”

2. Brodeur puts on show in Dome visit

Twenty-seven saves in a 3-2 loss to the Flames was small consolation for a competitor of this pedigree. Brodeur was certainly left no chance on the game winner, at 17:17 of the third, rookie Sean Monahan cashing a sumptuous cross-ice, back-door pass at the far post from Sven Baertschi.
“With (Dennis) Wideman being such an effective player, when he got the puck we were kind of mesmerized by him,” admitted Brodeur. “He passed it back and we kinda looked back for him and that kid (Monahan) was open back there.
“I didn’t see it. We were puck watching on that goal.”

3. Flames set record with late Monahan goal

Monahan, who turns 19 Saturday, broke the tie with 2:43 remaining, taking a cross-ice backdoor pass from Sven Baertschi and burying it behind Martin Brodeur.
"I think it was a smart play there by Wideman to get it to Baertschi, and I think we connected eyes there," Monahan said. "He saw me and gave me a great pass and fortunately enough I put it in the back of the net.
"It's pretty crazy, I guess, growing up watching [Brodeur] play and now scoring a goal on him. It's pretty awesome, and it's even better it's a game-winner."

4. Flames, Monahan down Devils

This cast of Calgary Flames was expected to make history.
Just not like this.
For the first time since the NHL started offering a reward for extra-time losses, the Flames have collected at least one point in each of their first five outings of a new season.
With Friday’s 3-2 triumph over the New Jersey Devils at the Saddledome, they became the first crew in Calgary’s history to achieve that feat.
Not bad for a group that was considered among the favourites to finish dead-last in the NHL standings this season.

5. Sven Baertschi steps up (after Montreal game)

“That’s, by far, the best game that I’ve seen Sven Baertschi play in Calgary,” Hartley said after Thursday’s practice at the Saddledome. “He competed. He was on the puck. He took a run at P.K. Subban, went hard at the net. That’s what I want to see from him.”
Baertschi just turned 21 and has only 29 NHL appearances on his resume (Hartley has been in the house for two dozen of those), but the talented winger will certainly take the praise after some harsh words from brand-new head of hockey operations Brian Burke at the tail-end of training camp.

“You don’t want to get called out, go work in a factory,” Hartley deadpanned during Thursday’s meeting with the media. “One day, I think I broke 15 windshields and nobody booed me. But the next day, I packed about 2,000 without and scratch and nobody cheered me. You decide where you want to be.”

Teach every kid on this team that ideology. You do that, this team will be a future upper echelon team. I really hope that Baertschi takes that kind of comment, and see the reality if it. His play is certainly showing me he just might have done that...

"We have to have a big road trip. We're playing some of the best teams in the league," said Giordano. "You're not going to beat those teams if you don't play the right way. We're looking forward to it but we've got to bring the juice."

This was a surprisingly outstanding game that ended in a not-so surprising way: With Monahan scoring another big goal for the upstart Flames.
While he’s not quite leading all rookies in scoring, he’s arguably been the best youngster so far in the young season. He’s taken on way more responsibilities than the likes of Tomas Hertl and Nathan MacKinnon, and has been at the center of the surprising start for the Flames.

In addition to the stiff-brimmed job he wore to greet the media Saturday morning, Jiri Hudler is sporting a number of hats these days: * As the collector of seven points, Hudler is the National Hockey League’s leading scorer.
* As the landlord of Sean Monahan, he is the keeper of the Calgary Flames’ most precious commodity.
A lot of responsibility.
“Monny is a young guy and I love having him at the house,” said Hudler. “For me, I like to have fun. We’re playing pool and talking about hockey. All the time, we do fun stuff.
“But when I get sick of him, I’ll find a place for him.”
Hudler, when he joined the Detroit Red Wings in 2003-04, lived in Robert Lang’s basement.
So is Monahan in the cellar, too?
“No, no,” said Hudler. “He’s got the presidential suite. He’s all set.”
