As the THT panel pointed out 20 reporters decided to not report this comment yet the Canuck honk did.
It is clear to me he reported this to bring a distraction to the Sharks who were playing his Canucks.
He can say he did it because bla bla bla his employer would have been upset if he didn't. Ya right his reason was 2 fold.
His tactic did not work they got smacked in the mouth 4-1. Thornton gets 2 assists and now Botchford looks like a shrew amongst his peers.
"You havn't heard a comment like that in the Canucks dressing room" were Johnson's words. "No never" and a bunch of verbal diarrhea came out of Botchford slimey yap in his reply.
Johnson "we know you have been around long enough to know that stuff happens all the time and yet this is the first time you reported it"
Thanks for posting that 19Yzerman i got to see one more time...Lebrun take a final dig at Botchford and say "i know 1 thing i hope he (as in Thornton) scores 4 goals tonight"

Everything about the tight-assed feigned-offense-taken crowd in this whole series of events, from Oates getting worked up about an awesome highlight that can only draw attention to the sport in a positive way (next on Sportscenter, we know we barely ever mention hockey but look what this rookie and future star did tonight), to trying to make players as faceless and monotonous as possible, is crap.
Let the players play and let them have a personality. It doesn't disrespect the sport, it makes the sport all the more entertaining and enhances our enjoyment of it as fans. Draw the "disrespect" line at Anisimov and Asham style celebrations, stuff like taunting your opposition.

This is all well and good, and yeah everyone should have been cheering for Joe last night because he's freaking awesome at hockey and his team kicks ass and should win the Pacific division. There's literally nothing about that team to dislike right now. But it doesn't change the fact that you were full of crap when you put words in the dude's mouth, and then called HIM a liar. If you're going to take a position on journalistic integrity it's probably best not to be full of BS while doing so.

Farts are always funny. Next time you're in bed with your significant other just fart under the blankets and see if hilarity doesn't ensue.

Hahah man, I'm 38, married with two kids and an excellent career and I still laugh at "toilet humour". Stop taking yourself so seriously. Learn to laugh at the absurdities of life. And I am here to tell you, dick jokes and farts are the essence of absurdity.

Botchford's own words prove he is a liar i don't need to and Lebrun and Johnson put him in his place.

The fact that there's any blowback at all about this being printed is part of the problem for me... Hockey should embrace these kinds of things getting press. Oh good lord, the star players actually have personality? In hockey? God forbid.

As awesome as that quote was, it does hurt Thornton's image and ability to get sponsorships
Also, im sure deep down Joe wouldnt want kids who look up to him and tell him, "I hope you score 4 goals and get to whip out your c*ck out tonight"
It's the same reason why they don't have the bench and penalty box mic'd up and allowing an unsensored broadcast of the game

He's now set the bar ridiculously high if he scores 5 goals in a game.

A little off topic but I liked how Johnson burned Botchford. He so deserved it. I'm liking his colour commentary as well!

The part you're talking about is at 4:15.

No I've never heard another player in a scrum shout out "shut up", use a curse word, and then ask everyone in the media, "have any of you played the game?" No, I have never seen that before. Then he engaged in a debate with Farhan, Farhan turned around to defend himself and Joe launched into his joke in front of everyone. I've never seen a situation like that.
|
What you said is not at all what happened. He at no point said he'd never heard the Canucks say something off colour. Your description is completely invented. The fact that you can persist in repeating your utter BS when there's VIDEO showing you're wrong is hilarious.
|
Botchford says he's never seen a situation like that? Oh really? Would he be surprised that a situation like that has come up, in Vancouver and he wrote about it?
Here was an exchange between Duncan Keith and Karen Thomson:
Quote:
Keith: “What did you see?”
Thomson: “Well, there it looked like there was a penalty that went undetected. You seemed a bit frustrated.”
Keith: “Oh, no. I don’t think there was. I think he scored a nice goal, and that’s what the ref saw. Maybe we should get you as a ref maybe, hey?
Thomson: “Yeah, maybe. Can’t skate though.”
Keith: “First female referee. Can’t probably play either, right? But you’re thinking the game, like you know it? Seeya.”
|
And here's what Botchford wrote about it:
Quote:
In short, Keith was being a jackass playing his “you never played the game” card.
Would he have done it to a male reporter? Would he have done it to me?
|
http://blogs.theprovince.com/2013/04...n-on-the-wing/
Botchford might be able to get off on a technicality, being that Keith might not have been in a scrum, or he might not have used the words 'shut up'. Botchford was well aware that Keith said that Thomson hadn't played the game. If you are going to lie to the media on TSN, at least make sure someone can't find it by using Google for 30 seconds. What he said yesterday is patently false and shows us his true colours. I hope he gets fired.

maybe Botchford has penis envy of Joe and of all players when they say you never played the game.
Botchford is a whiney punk.
Probably one of the tools in Vancouver media that said those rioters were not Canuck fans.

It's pretty obvious to me, at least, that this makes the situations completely different. The issue that's being discussed is whether it's okay to report a comment by a player who's not currently being interviewed, if that player speaks up to the media member in response to a question to the player who IS being interviewed. Joe wasn't being interviewed, and took it upon himself to engage the reporter, directly, in a discussion. Keith was being interviewed when he made that comment. Two entirely different situations.
I'm not saying Botchford was right to report what he did from a journalistic standpoint, by the way, though I am glad he did because it's a good quote and I like Joe Thornton more now having heard it. I just think that in discussing it people shouldn't spew BS about who said what when the facts aren't really contested.

the real irony and just dessert of a pound of sand that is being served to Botchford amongst his peers is that Botchford tried to make Joe look bad with what Thornton said and the reality is Botchford is the one that has made himself look bad for breaking that player/reporter locker room trust in which all aprox 20 other reporters kept the integrity but Botchford decided to run with it.
Now Botchford is dealing with his own fallout. lmao @ u Botchford and u still never played the game, Poor muffin.

Botchford said he's never heard a player say those things. This is false. He has written about how he has heard those lines and how he didn't think they were right. He didn't give any context of where the player was, when they said it. He flat out said he has never heard a player said that. They asked never, and he replied never. He obviously has, since he wrote about it.

Yes but is Thornton engaging the reporter for an interview, or just talking to another human being? Can these guys have conversations with reporters without it being an interview? They see these guys all the time its not out of the question to think they're familiar enough to have off-the-record discussions as friends/collegues. And with something so vulgar being said, I would think Botchford would at least have the tact and professionalism to ASK Thornton if he was ok to print it. I mean come on, it's obviously and off color statement and a joke. Worse things are said every day in dressing rooms not just NHL-wide but hockey-wide. Frick, the 14 year olds I coach have more colorful language. You'd think a guy that's in them everyday would be smart enough to keep something like that to himself. I can't imagine Botchford sees the inside of many NHL rooms after this. If I was a player I'd tell him to f*** himself. And then tell him he can print that if he wants.
