I promised my Mom that if our dog got sick or the decision had to be made that I'd do it and we'd just tell my Dad he went peacefully sleeping in the yard. I think it would be devastating for my Dad, they've become absolute best friends as they've become older.

The vet gave me some meds for his legs, it isn't anything neurological they say, it's just arthritis. He's been slowly improving over the last couple days and can get up the stairs again like before. In fact when I kind of press him along to do it he can move pretty good... so I think he's just being ginger with it.

I think he will do just fine... but I really hope that this isn't the start of him... degenerating into a state where my parents have to make a call on him. I'd sooner he just go peacefully in the yard. As sad as my Dad would be knowing his little guy went peacefully in the yard they enjoyed many memories in would give him piece of mind he went that way.

We lost one of our Dog's today. Neiko collapsed (suspect a heart attack) as he was trying to go down some stairs as my 7 year old daughter witnessed it. My wife and daughter attended to him immediately but he had passed. Neiko gave us over 14 years of love, joy and memories. He was diagnosed at 2 with Congenital Heart Failure and had been on Enalapril since. Our Veterinarian was always amazed he did so well, for so long. Forever in peace my friend.

This thread is both the saddest thread and one of the threads in which CP shines the most brightly.

As a relatively new pet owner, I can't imagine the grief that I'd feel to lose my little kitty. I am impressed by the genuine compassion that CPers have shown to strangers in their time of need.

Flame Envy, my thoughts are with you and your family. It sounds like your Neiko lived quite the life and defied some really tough odds! He was clearly quite the fighter and is a very cute little guy.

Very sorry for your loss. At least he died at home, surrounded by those he loved (and was loved by).

These precious animals fill our lives that it is inevitable that when they die they leave a massive void. We should always remember them, be grateful for them and laugh at the memories of their goofy moments. Thank you for sharing your photo of Neiko and you have my deepest sympathies for your loss.

Sorry for you loss! Since my baby has arrived I think our pups are feeling a bit neglected. I am going to go home and give them some extra cuddles tonight!

This is a beautiful and awful thread...first time I've read it, the stories and links have got me breaking down.

To all of you who have lost friends and companions, I am very sorry for your loss.

We've had a tough past few months....

My parents had to put down their dog, she was fine and then she wasn't. She went blind and lost control of her bowels within a couple days and the vet advised euthanasia. Fortunately my aunt and my daughter were in town at the time and were able to help and support my folks, who were devastated. Sammi was a beautiful and kind soul who brought joy to everyone who met her, the best companion my Mom could have had. When the time came she knew.. she rode quietly to the vet in my daughters lap and just went to sleep after her shot. I'm glad I got to see her when I was down for Fathers Day. I love you Sam.

The other one is harder.

My daughter and I are both 'animal people', we love them all. My annual charities of choice are kids and animals, simple as.

Tigger was 8 months old when he adopted us. We'd gone to the Humane Society to see about volunteering and to drop off some money. My daughter wandered off to see the cats, her favorite part, while I took care of the donation stuff. When I went into the cat area, my daughter was sitting in a chair with an orange bundle asleep in her lap. It took one look from her and I knew that we weren't leaving without the boy. He was the victim of a divorce, once separated neither human had a place for him...their loss.

If one had to describe the boy with one word it would be 'fearless'. He moved through the world without worry and that was obvious the minute we took him out of the pet carrier. Normally animals need some time to adjust, not this one, he just moved in and took over. I love that bout him. He was also very social and love human interaction, not many cats want to play with their humans as much as the boy did, mostly he just wanted to be near you.

On July 7th, I opened the door to the deck for the boy. It was a beautiful warm night and he wanted to go out and say hi to his pals. That was the last time I saw him. When I got up the next day I noticed that he hadn't come home and I started to worry. I haven't yet stopped worrying and wondering. We've enlisted the neighbours, the local vet, the Humane Society, the City, the people who made his chip...everything I can think of, nothing. The worst part is the not knowing...actually, the worst part is the fact that I have such a tremendous imagination, because I will lay in bed at night and scenarios and scenes run through my mind and none of them end well for the boy. And I hate myself for it.

I still look for him everyday in the neighbourhood. And I miss him, so much.

On happier note, we just another kitten. Izabella was 2 month, 2 weeks old when we got her and she's so much fun. And she's much like the boy, very social and loves to be around people.

TC, I can only imagine the angst in having a missing pet. You have to always hold out in hope as there has been many amazing animal journey's that end happily. Great to hear you have a new addition.

We had to take our beloved Wheaten Terrier to the vet today for the last time. He couldn't stand up on his own, so we made the hard choice to put him down.

Reilly was 108 dog years (15.5) and was probably the most spoiled and amazing pet one could ask for.

RIP my friend i'll miss you

Sounds like Reilly had the best life a dog could ever wish for.

Always sad when a family pet has to be put down.

I've dreaded this day. My poor cat just didn't look right when we came back from vacation. We had her put down today, she had kidney disease. 12 years is a decent run for a cat, but it doesn't make it any easier. Such a wonderful disposition, she was kind and gentle. Loved my kids, had a terrific purr. My heart is broken.
