The World Juniors is a massive step down in play compared to the NHL. If Monahan is playing important minutes with the Flames I see no reason whatsoever for him to play in the World Juniors. I know kids want to play in the World Juniors, and Monahan is probably a captain for the upcoming 2014 team but it the positives of staying and playing in the NHL far outweight going down in competition to play against teenagers again.
Though I really agree with it being a step down, part of player development is putting players in different situations.
Going to represent Team Canada is still a huge honor at any stage. It will give him a tournament in which he will be looked upon as one of the leaders on the team (I don't think he becomes team captain - usually a returnee is selected for that, but you never know in Monahan's case). It is also a short tourney, so he won't be missing too much time.
Just a short re-adjustment period. I think the only downside with having him suit up for Canada would be if he is in the thick of the Calder race.
I guess it all depends on how you view that time. If it was longer than a month, I would definitely say no. With it being a short tournament, a chance to win something highly regarded in a career, and just the added experience from all the pressure and leadership responsibilities he would be exposed to - I think it would be good for his development on a whole, even if it is a step down in competition.

My thoughts exactly. He'll learn so much by participating there. Remember, he played for the '67's and has never been in a high pressure playoff type situation. This will be a great learning experience for him.
While it would be fun to have Monahan to brag about in the World Juniors, I see no value to sending him there, if he is already contributing amongst men in the best league in the world.
The 9 game pressure cooker he is in right now puts more weight on his shoulders than the tournament, in my opinion.

Reason: Being stupid.

That's not true. He has played in and won gold in both the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and the Canadian Under-18 National Team for the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. I know Canada and TSN love to hype the under 20 World Juniors but the U-17 and U-18 are just as big for these players to play in. To suggest he's never been in a high pressure playoff type situation is just flat out incorrect.
He's staying with the Flames this season. If he slumps in late November big time to the point where he's a healthy scratch, then maybe let him play in the WJHC. However, if he's still playing well with significant minutes with the flames he should not be made available.

LOL at people wanting to send Sean to the WJC. The only way he goes to the WJC is if he is sent back to Ottawa or is struggling with the Flames. Both scenarios are not ideal for us Flames fans.
If he is playing meaningful minutes in Calgary, he stays here. Burke or Feaster would not even entertain the idea of sending him to the WJC. It won't even be debated.

Surely you're not suggesting that both those tournaments are equivalent to the WJC. The media coverage alone of both those tournaments suggest they aren't.

I think you are over simplifying a complex issue. Playing at the WJC could be a huge stepping stone for the rest of his career. That is a pretty meaningful tournament where he can get a lot of experience from. It is a win/win situation in my opinion.

So is playing in the World Championships. If we make the playoffs, maybe we should send Backlund overseas. Maybe Sven too while we're at it.

Not sure how taking a key player out of our lineup near the halfway mark of the season is a win for the Flames
He can develop in the NHL as well. Especially if he's playing well.
If he's struggling, then yeah. I'd send him over for sure.
