We got the win and that's all that matters. I give MacDonald props for stopping a high volume of shots, and a saving a few pretty good scoring chances. He did seem frantic at times though, and both goals he let in were shots he should have had. He certainly didn't make it look easy (even the routine saves).

All in all, it was good enough and it was a stat boosting game for him, so I am not complaining, but if I am Hartley, I am not hanging my hat after that either. Just like with Ramo's loss in the first game, last night's win was a full team effort.

Several people have commented that MacDonald should have had the Subban goal.

That is ludicrous.

Subban got 100% of that puck, it was an absolute rocket. No goalie in the NHL saves that shot. The only hope is that it hits you, and on that, he wasn't very far out in the net. However, I don't think he can be criticized for that because they were moving the puck around on the PP and he couldn't over-commit.

MacDonald was fantastic last night. Accept it and let it go.

If the answer is no... then I don't really care if Hartley plays him or not.
I have zero doubt that Gillies will be the #1 in 3-4 years, kid is an absolute stud.

The shot was from at least 30' out, wasn't screened or tipped, and MacDonald was like 6" off the goal line. Most goalies would have saved that, or would have been in a position to save it. If shots like that were a sure goal, we'd see a lot higher scores in the NHL.

It was a powerplay, but it's not like they had him working hard at the moment.

He did make a couple of career saves in the game though, so the usual fluffy goals are forgivable.

It's eery how similar the current goaltending situation is to the Rick Tabaracci/Fred Brathwaite years. Guys that are clearly backup/journeymen goalies that got a chance to play a lot and showed some good results on a rebuilding team. Joey Mac can start as long as he keeps giving performances like last night. I'll give him a pass as long as he's better than Devan Dubnyk. (stupid Oilers)

Shots like that usually are a sure goal. The guy's got a shot like a cannon and he placed it perfectly (he didn't win the Norris last year based soley on his defensive play). The only chance MacD would have had would have been if he'd been 10' out of the net to cut down the angle... and then he would have gotten beat the other way (it was a powerplay after all.)

And like MacDonald last night, Tabaracci and Brathwaite would both show flashes of brilliance at times that would bamdoozle some fans into thinking maybe they were more.

I was wondering if he was the right coach for Sven but I think he's going to be okay. You have to stick with him now, I think he's allright, he seems to be saying the right things so I'm okay with him.

So now that it's the day after, and MacDonald was the first star, still the wrong call?

Yup totally agree, but I still appreciate the fact we are getting some decent goaltending from a career 'tweener. I'm not under the assumption that we don't need to find a more permanent solution.

I never thought it was the wrong call just an odd call. All we know is that the team got the win so good on them. We don't know what would have happened if Ramo got the call.

Surprised MacDonald was the first star though certainly wasn't in my view. Probably wouldn't have been a star at all.

It's mainly because the people picking the stars looks at numbers on a piece of paper. Statisitically, MacDonald had a great game last night. Statistics don't always match reality though.

Thus far the only complaint i have about Hartley is his infatuation with Ben Street. Kid can win faceoffs yes, gets pushed around often. Has stone hands, often will chip the puck up the boards inside the Flames zone just like last night once again right to the oppositions D.
But in spite of that Hartley has done a great job with this roster of who's who.
Hartley is getting these players to play above what most expected.

It has only been four games, no one should get carried away. But the quality I like the most about Hartley is his positivity -- he's the kind of guy that won't let his guys get down on themselves. He's also a guy who rewards hard work and getting the job done, Street is playing on our top-line and taking key faceoffs and doesn't look out of place. He's giving guys opportunities, I have cringed at some of the situations I've seen Monahan put in -- but he's got 5pts in 4gp and has yet to be pointless in a game.

LeBrun on the Flames

Quote:
"I don’t coach to save my job, I coach to win games. I’ve always been that way, and I will always remain the same. I feel as a coach if you’re not yourself, you have zero chance. I just want to give this team a chance to win. If my team has some success, I don’t have to worry about myself as a person. That’s how I’ve always looked at it. If I would have lived my life by every rumor, I would have coached 40 teams and been fired 60 times."

Then there’s a quick pause, before Hartley finishes his thought.

"My job is to prove Jay Feaster and Brian Burke right. Whatever Mad Dog or Bodog says, I don’t really give a s---."
Nice read from LeBrun.

I saw something last night that further sold me on Hartley. At the end of the game he was leaving the bench and as he went down the tunnel he reached back to high five a hand that was sticking out.

That I liked.

Is now the right time for me to start a Bob Hartley for Jack Adams award discussion? Or perhaps just the standard Bob "frickin" Hartley......

Regardless of what happens this season, I am trying to imagine why the flames would fire Hartley.......unless they go on a 40 game losing streak, win one and then go one a 30 game losing streak to finish the year.

Seems like the guys at bodog need to head back to the think tank for a while longer....
