That is how the Leafs gave up the #2 pick for Kessell. They never ever thought that when they added Kessll that they would be a lottery team.
That's not a very good comparison. At the time of the trade the Leafs had not made the playoffs in 4 years, had finished last in their division and 12th in the conference in consecutive years(missing the playoffs by a combined 23 points in that time), and in trading for Kessel were trading for a hopeful franchise player.

Burke was banking on Kessel becoming the guy in TO from day one and I think it's fair to say that most people believed that Kessel was never going to be a franchise player, but a very good support player. There were questions about his compete level, his defensive play and was coming off of shoulder surgery. Basically anyway you slice it it was risky of Burke to put so much stock into Kessel becoming elite. He also needed the additions of Komisarek, Beauchemin and a more mature Luke Schenn and "the best goalie outside the league" Jonas Gustavsson to improve the league worst defense of the previous year(293 GA - 13 worse than the next worst) and 46 goals off of the most porous team in the playoffs the previous year(the Canadiens who finished 8th in the East). That's a huge ask, and the general consensus was that they were a bubble team who finish no better than 7th or 8th in the East.

Philadelphia on the other hand have made the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years, winning at least one playoff series in each of the last 3 times that they made it to the post season and have an established franchise player in Giroux. They are a young team with pieces that are projected to continue to grow(Simmonds, Voracek, B. Schenn, and Couturier) coupled with guys who still possess the ability to turn it around in Luke Schenn and Steve Mason. How bad was Ilya Bryzgalov last year to add?

Knowing Laviolette's style it appears that he just ran stale in the locker room with a hard on player's approach(see Carter and Richards - dry island) and his stint in Carolina where after a Stanley Cup victory he narrowly missed the playoffs twice and was fired after a 12-11-2 start....the team finished the season going 33-19-5 and reaching the Eastern Conference Finals.

Quite simply Philly's nucleus is way better than Toronto's at the time of the Kessel trade, and considering the abrasive nature of Laviolette it's far more likely that the team's recent plight is more down to his staleness than it is the team.

In addition Glencross isn't expected to be the guy and would be brought in as a guy who brings offence, can kill penalties and has the reputation of a sandpaper playoff type player...all for 2.55 a year. That's very different to Kessel, and the Flyers are very different to that Leafs team.

Thinking out loud here...

Glencross and Berra for Coburn and a 1st? Do they have to throw in a prospect?

Bad attitude is probably too harsh of a way to put it as it is how consistently he takes shifts/games off. I'm sure we wouldn't have any problem if he wasn't scoring but still being active in the game defensively, but not doing anything at all does reflect pretty poorly on his current reputation.

Yeah heard that too, then Warrener mentioned "unless it was one of those back door kind of deals" and did the click (and I imagine the gun)...he was joking, I'm pretty sure lol.

Back door deals implying that they would have a gentleman's agreement with Glenncross to go to Philly for some youngsters and come re-sign for big jack when he is a free agent...or Edwards would pay the mortgage on his ranch...whatever haha.

No way the Flyers do that deal.

Couturier = Baertschi
Simmonds >> Glencross
Coburn >> Butler

How about just

Glencross and Butler for Simmonds and Coburn?

They save $4.2m

Flyers get 2 scoring LW and a cheap D. They shake up the room and save significant cap.

Flames continue to get bigger and harder to play against. Simmonds fits the age range the Flames are lacking and is a RW which we need. Coburn is a top 4 D that actually gives Calgary a very respectable top 4. Russel slides back to the 3rd pairing. Calgary gets a big 6'4 center signed cheap for 2 more sesasons after this and this allows them to send Monahan back to junior.

I know many area against trading Sven and I am really only including him because of what Burke said and theorizing that Burke is not a big fan of him. Coutts is the same age and would be a huge piece of the rebuild. Simmonds is an upgrade over Glencross imo and Coburn is a huge upgrade over Butler and is another Calgarian
Decent but I think they don't take Butler.

You do that trade every day. Despite Ashayx monster love for Bart, it's a no brainer.
You get a younger, more consistent Glencross in Simmonds, a more balanced and equivalent upside Bart in Couts, and you upgrade big time over Butler.

Great trade idea! I still think the franchise really values Bart, as they should, so I don't see either side liking that deal, but it's a great idea.

Lots of teams kick tires on lots of players. I am not sure there is a story here.

Scoreface reminds me so much of the old core. Flashes of brilliance followed by huge cold streaks of frustrating, lazy, selfish play. Watching these new Flames really highlights this difference.

I hope Feaster is shopping him at the deadline.

Look, I've got a huge "mancrush" on Baertschi as well, but you do that trade all day. Of course, it's lopsided enough that Philly wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole....

Glencross is one of only a few veteran Flames that will have any value on the market.

Giordano is the only guy who might be worth more, but now that he's the captain (and having a good start) I'd say he'll be around for a few years, and maybe even part of the rebuild.

Hopefully Cammalleri can net us a 1st rounder, but that's up to how he performs this season.

After that all it's likely all our other vets can bring in are mid-round picks and C grade prospects.

Which is why I hope they do deal Glencross when his value is at its highest. We need as many pieces for the future as we can get, and either him or Gio will bring the best returns.

I still wonder if he's even he'll be willing to waive his no trade clause, but now that he's aware of the rebuild maybe Glencross would waive it to go to certain teams that are going somewhere.

"Hi, my name is Curtis. I bounced around the league in bottom 6 roles because of the inconsistency and pouty play I have recently became known for. After bouncing between the bottom teams in the league in a periphery role, I got picked up by the Calgary Flames. When they picked me up, they were a cup contending team and I got to play in all sorts of roles with highly skilled players. I'm a 20-30 goal scorer in the right situations and signed a long term contract with a no-movement clause because staying in Alberta is more important to me than the possibility of money or fame somewhere else. In exchange for the safety and consistency of ultimate control over where I play, I left some dollars on the table from cities I had no interest in playing in. I lock horns with coaches, take large stretches of games off and generally possess little situational awareness with the puck. I get my cookies, collect my paycheques and sometimes get real-fired up. In the summer, I go back to my true passion, ranchin' 'n ridin'. So far this year and last, I've been pretty much phoning it in and stick out like a sore thumb when surrounded by players giving consistent hard efforts and playing a team oriented style."

He's not a huge problem, but, his issues as a hockey player have been on display for Flames fans for some time now. Only, he's flown under the radar somewhat because of more colourful headcases ahead of him, (Bourque, Tanguay, Iginla). Now that they are gone, his 'brand' of hockey is apparent.

What the hell is this pouty crap about....he gets a sour look on his face so he's pouty.....pouty, uninterested, no heart.....this place is like junior high some days.

How in the hell does anybody in here know if he's pouting, or pissed at himself, playing injured....can get pretty frustrating know what you want to do but the body won't let you get it done.

Some of you are making stuff up to justify wanting to trade him IMO...

Brent Sutter said that he does behave that way, i believe it went something like "...Glennie sometimes needs a kick in the rear..."

Consistency IS his problem. That cannot be argued. He would be an awesome 3rd liner on a contender though. Id say Pens or Bruins or even the Kings. That being said, if he were to find consistency, he would be an absolute steal for the flames.

Agreed. I can pretty much say factually that Glencross does not pout, he does not play without heart, and he's not uninterested.

He is the definition of a heart and soul player that wants to do everything he can to make his team win. When he's mad on the ice, he's mad at himself because he knows he can do better and hates costing the team a goal or penalty or win.

The only thing that Glencross can be guilty of at this point is trying to do too much. He's trying to become more of a finesse player and less of a power forward, which simply won't do. He's effective when he's checking and driving to the net, not when he's doing no-look passes to the opposition.

This entire thread is irrelevant though. The topic was beat to death last season and Glencross will not go anywhere but maybe Edmonton. To him being close to home is worth more than money and you've got to respect the guy for that. Perhaps if you bribe him with a high value contract extension he'll move, but don't bet on it.
