He needs to work and focus on doing PBP. A lot of times he seems to not know who's on the ice and trys to cover by doing colour which isn't his job but Charlie's.

I was really impressed with the effort by all of the players tonight. Lots of great backchecking by the forwards to break up plays.
Really excited about Monahan's first goal, the kid is looking great. Baertschi is looking solid as well. I think the two of them were roommates on this road trip, it looks like they're building some chemistry. I would also like to see Sven shoot more because he's got a wicked shot.
Also, Hudler is awesome. Loved the celebration, staring down the fans against the glass.

Kerr is very entertaining. Makes me laugh. He seems to be real the way he calls a game and it has worked for me. Haha.
But I agree that sometimes he does forget about the PBP.

I thought his decision making was solid and he was trying to take care of his own zone first. Nothing wrong with that.

I commented on Colborne and want to be clear on one thing. I'm not ragging on him so much as the decision by management to bring him in over players that battled it out at camp. What's done is done and he's here, so we'll give him time. In that respect I agree with your comments about giving him time to learn the system and get some more practices under his belt.
But I don't agree with your conditioning comment: forget looking slow in comparison to his teammates, he looked slow in comparison to the Blue Jacket players. That's on him.

I had so much fun watching the game, I didn't even care what the other team did or what the final was. Win or lose, this team is fun to watch!

It seems to me as we'll that this is the kind of system that a healthy Cammy could thrive in.

Managements decision to bring him over was a good one. This is a rebuilding team that is also weak on solid prospect depth and management is trying to address that. They saw an opportunity to add a prospect to the pool for very little and they took it. Good move.
Agreed it would be ideal if they could have acquired Colborne and been able to have full flexibility in being able to send him down and not risk losing him, but that's not reality. This is the NHL, not novice hockey, so not everything has to be perfectly fair. The other players should and will have to understand the situation and deal. They are still being given the opportunity to compete for spots, and the Flames would have been foolish to pass up on adding the right type of prospect to the team due to not wanting to be unfair to others.

I think the proverbial jury is out on the bolded sentence.
People are saying "hey, we got him for a 4th and that's basically nothing," which is fine if you concede that the other team agreed to accept basically nothing for him.
Time will tell and I'm content to let it play out. As I said earlier, I just hope this isn't a vanity project for Burke. That would be more unwelcome news than the Flames picking up a player that didn't pan out.

Call me crazy, but I thought Colborne was alright. He looked a little behind the play int he first period, like he was playing with guys he had just met, but I thought in the second and third he had excellent puck pursuit, I noticed him a lot. Yeah he's a big body, and could use it more to his advantage, but it doesn't mean he can't be an effective player in spite of it. I thought he was way better than Monahan was in his first game... I'm definitely not passing judgement just yet on this kid.

“There’s no more divisions on the team,” said Hartley. “Everyone’s (been) warned that we’re not going to tolerate this, from the ownership down to the video coach. We preach every day that we’re going to be a team. That’s how we want to create this new chapter. This is the new edition of the Calgary Flames.”
|
Quote:
“A relief” is how Monahan described the goal. “Once it went in, I was pretty happy. It was a great feeling. To get it in my second game is pretty awesome. Everything is going so quickly right now. I’m taking it, I guess, one day at a time and, on the ice, one shift at a time.”
|

“We did a pretty good job,” said Street. “There’s a lot of responsibility on the centre, especially in this system. We’re down low. We’re breaking pucks out. The way that team — and a lot of teams — play, they put a lot of pressure on the defencemen, so you need to be an outlet. A lot of times, you have the puck pretty low in your zone.
“As a young NHL player, it’s not exactly the most comfortable position to be in, but I thought we all did a pretty good job.”

"I think the speed of the game caught some guys off guard," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "(The Flames) countered really well. They work extremely hard. You've got to give them credit. There were times when we'd just pick our head up and somebody would be there. They forced some turnovers."
|
Quote:
"It's not very complicated," coach Bob Hartley said. "Our recipe right now (is) we're going to work, play with passion, guys are blocking shots, driving — we're a team now."
|
Quote:
"We have to be resilient in the game," said Hudler, who praised Monahan as a key contributor who has led by example.
"Things are going to happen that won't go our way. Tonight was another great game, a great effort by the guys. We held on at the end — I wouldn't say held on, but we did a good job of holding the lead."

2 games in, and I hate to be this guy.
But with the way they're playing so far, and the ludicrous amount of cap-room we have... this could be a team that makes things exciting this year.

All speculation of course, but I wouldn't be shocked if Sarich was on the opposite of those two.

In disagree that the jury is still out, it was the right move because it's the type of move you should make every time if you are playing the educated odds. I agree, that HOW it plays out is still up in air, and I'll even concede that it is possible that the Leafs could end up drafting a better player than Colborne with that 4th round pick (although unlikely, which is the point), but nothing that occurs moving forward can change the fact that it was the right move.
It was a rare opportunity, and if you make the right move each time you will end up a head in the long run. No different than making the right move in a game of poker. Even when you do the right thing, it's possible that your opponent might get lucky, hit his card on the river, but that doesn't mean you made a mistake or did the wrong thing. Keep make the right moves at the right time, and eventually you end up on top.
