Great write up I have missed them

3 goal leads have always been a problem.

Sven has all ready replaced Iggy in the shoot out. Hudler may as well have shot from outside the blue line.

A point is a plus.

Good analysis, agree with it all. Personally I think there were more positives than negatives. It's hard to contain one of the top 5 players in the world and he was the difference tonight during regulation and in the shootout.

yes, it is more nerve wracking than being down by 1 IMO. Big-ish leads for the flames always seem to be burden lately (ie the last few seasons).

I really don't know what you were going for when this post was made, Hudler is arguably our best shootout player. His attempt was not that far off.

Agree on Russell. Dude's a player. Looked pretty smart out there tonight. I expected a huge liability the way people talked about him, but he looked very composed and in control most of the time.

The goat is Wilson. That takedown of a helmet less opponent is reckless and should be penalized. If hockey keeps fighting it should draw bounds and look sternly upon these takedowns.

Honorable mention to Ferraro for the f bomb with 11 seconds left.

Goat horns have to go to Galiardi for the idiotic penalty. Embellishment or not, he needlessly poked Neuvirth's head, and by his immediate look towards the ref, he knew he had done something stupid. May have cost the Flames the win.

I'm on the fence about Hartley playing him so heavily after the penalty. I understand the need to show a young team that they are allowed to make mistakes, but there are certain mistakes that are unacceptable.

S.O.B. is all over the place. He's wildly out of position defensively. Total liability.

The lineup as a whole is much quicker & better positionally in the forecheck. As long as we keep teams on the back foot with high intensity we'll be alright. The problems occur when they lose momentum offensively & get pinned in the defensive zone. Physically the D corps is not strong enough to hold down the fort.

Great write up. I particularly agree with the OT assessment. Watching the TSN and Sportsnet talking heads, they the pound away at the "inexperienced" Flames panicking and blowing a huge lead. They conveniently forget that the Flames dominated overtime and the last couple of minutes in the third as it doesn't fit the narative. Obviously would have prefered the win, but a good effort overal. I thought D. Jones played very well. Looks like a legit RW.

I think he wanted to get him a goal in his first game.

He was backchecking, stealing pucks in the defensive end and even drew a penalty by helping the D down low.

It will take a bit for him to adjust starting a rush a little further back, but maybe having that extra 20 feet to gather speed can allow him to blast past defenceman. On 3 separate occasions he was able to get around the D to the outside and get a decent shot.
Completely agree with this.

Good write-up - accurately reflected what unfolded.

If the Flames play like this all season, I will be very, very happy.

The Caps put out a 64M team and the Flames played them even up with a 45M line up.

19M That is like Ovechkin 9.8M and Backstrom 6.7M not playing for the Caps.

There won't be many teams that get a point out of Washington with Ovechkin playing like he did last night.

Playing like he did last night Ovechkin is not one of the top 5 players in the world.... he is clear-cut #1.

For all the posters on this board who were wondering who would play Bouwmeester's tough minutes: Wideman 26, Gio 27 Brodie 27 and Russell 20

I do not believe that adding Bouwmeester to this line up instead of Butler or SOB would have done as well.

Butler played a strong 17 minutes as #5.

Street did not look out of place..... Hartley starting him ahead of Horak and Colborne looks to be a valid option. It will be interesting to see if Hartley sits players after they play a lackluster game. This team is better than the sum of its parts..... Completely opposite than the Flames of the last 5 years where the paper lineup was much better than the results delivered.

I really like this version of the Flames..... at least the way they played last night

Street wasn't a liability, but playing him on the powerplay over Sven is silly.

Well of course some members of the D would have to play more minutes now that JBO is gone but that does not mean that they can do it or were great at it.

Brodie did not have a good game. So saying that he took on extra minutes does not mean much. If not for GIo playing his best game in years, Brodie's play would have looked a lot worse.

I like what Russell brings but he is no 2nd line pairing d-man. Yes he is good with the puck but he is below average defensively.

Thought Wideman played great, but i have seen enough of him over the years to know he can play great one game and be pretty underwhelming on the defensive side the next game.

I agree that Butler played well for his 17 minutes. He was a little more physical and seemed to pick up his man. His outlet passes are still horrible.

SOB sucks, always has and always will. Rather they had just kept Sarich than having SOB for the next 2 years.

For me the "On The Line" piece is the team's reputation. Knowing that the Flames don't have the star power to push for the playoffs, the team has to establish an identity in the first 20 games.
  • Are they going to be hard to play against?
  • Are they going to be a stingy defense-first team, that makes opponents actually earn their goals and wins?
  • Or are they going to be more of a free-wheeling "young guns" team that will be exciting to watch but struggle to translate that skill into wins (ie. the Oilers of the last 3-4 years)?

That's what is on the line for the first quarter of the season - telling the world who they are and what they are going to be all about this year.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Having low expectations is a refreshing position to be in. I wasn't disappointed by the loss.

If this is the team we get all year there is no way we're picking #1 overall.

Was very impressed with Mikael Backlund last night. I thought Ramo was solid. Never looked flustered. Who is stopping that second Ovechkin shot? Nobody.
