Doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. A couple of those guys are clearly not NHL ready or play a much different game. Like I said at least if Breen plays it makes sense. But if the Flames continue favouring Butler, Smith, and O'Brien over the young players I will be disappointed.

If Urbom couldn't outplay those guys then you throw him back on waivers and all you've lost is the transaction fee. Don't see what the big deal would be.

All 5 of those guys should be able to fill in for injuries, especially during a rebuild when you want your prospects to see how they measure up and what they need to improve. O'Brien was brought in for his toughness...nothing else, and we need that. Remember last year? Butler I would like to see moved but I'd rather see at least Breen and Sieloff given the chance. As for Smith, he's the perfect 7th guy to sit in the press box. Don't want any of the prospects sitting.

Urbom wouldn't force any prospect to sit, if he doesn't make the team he becomes the 7th defenseman or is placed on waivers and gone. If he makes the team Smith should be sent to Abbortsford or Alaska if they really want to give the young guys a chance in the AHL...I mean worst case scenario is Butler is sat, which is also the absolute best case scenario.

Bringing up your own guys and giving them a chance is a great theory, and if they actually show it with Breen I'll be much more happy with the decision, but until they show a willingness to actually do it I'll be skeptical.

And then there's Colborne. A 6'5'' center brought in for his size and potential who isn't very physical, at this point Urbom is practically the defense version of him, except Colborne actually took the spot of a potential rookie. Backlund, Monahan and Stajan are all better than him and the Flames would not be worse off if they had Horak or Knight up. Even if Monahan is sent down I feel a lot more comfortable with the center depth these next couple years than defense. What Colborne provides is another crapshoot at having a 23 year old with potential turn into a support player going forward, exactly the type of chance Urbom provides on defense except the need is even bigger when Russell, O'Brien and Butler are potential top 4 players. Again worst case is Urbom is sat, like Colborne will be today.

At this point I'm pretty much crying over spilled milk. I can assure you I wasn't going to shoot myself in the bath tub over this but I just would have liked the Flames to take a flyer on the guy is all. Again, if Breen (or let's say any rookie) gets a permanent spot in the lineup once healthy and does play 60+ games it makes a lot more sense, but if not I don't see the reason to favour this defensive corps(e) over a 22 year old with size and potential.

I thought that the Flames would have picked off Urbom, but it also makes sense not to.

They probably have their eyes on some other players they are hoping end up getting waived (as Conroy stated), and they also need to conserve a couple of contract spots for a few of their NCAA graduates this year, like Gaudreau or Agostino.

They may use one up on Arnold, but I think they sign him in the off-season. Lower risk he gets a FA contract later in the season when he becomes one, though that would be really dependent on the kind of season he has this year. Gillies may get signed as well - depends on how good he does this year, as well as the Flames' goalie depth does as a whole..

They will more than likely target a couple of NCAA free agents as well. You have to think that the Flames are looking very attractive to NCAA free agents right about now.

I would assume they want to keep their contracts at around the 47 mark this year, as trading a few of their soon to be UFAs at the end of the year might entail bringing back prospects with pro contracts, or an additional roster player if the receiving team doesn't have the contract space.

Urbom would have been nice, but I think the Flames probably felt that the contract space is more important right now, and they are hoping a bigger fish falls through the waiver wire.

My thoughts on why they might not have picked up Urbom was they have to many d-men. Yes Smith would have been sent down, but after Breen does his conditioning stint what would they do with Butler? Sorry nobody is trading for Butler without sending a contract back. I highly doubt that Butler at $1.7 million would be picked up on waivers. In order to have Urbom be the 7th d-man while they gave Breen his chance that probably meant that both Smith and Butler would have to go to the heat. With Sieloff, Wotherspoon, Rammage ect. down there already where would 2 more guys play?

I'm just a little confused as to what Conroy meant when he said there were some guys they were 'watching' that may become available on the waiver wire. We've seen Corrente and Urbom, players that you would think that the Flames would be interested in given their physical play go on waivers and were passed over. Would really like to know what Conny meant by that statement, like were they making bets on who would be going on waivers or are they actually interested in players that they think would be going on waivers? From what I can see, there doesn't appear to be much more else on other teams rosters (apart from perhaps another player from NJ, who still need to do something once Tedenby is cleared from his bogus injury). But even then, are these guys that hit waivers deemed an upgrade on what we already have? Confusing messages out there for sure.

Those weren't the droids they were looking for.

Colburne was obviously a guy they were interested in if he hit waivers. They decided to deal for him instead. Who knows who the other players were, obviously they didn't get waived.
