You are correct. Big Four isn't even at the top of the list. Having it in the East Village redevelopment area or the West Village redevelopment area (where the science center was and where the bus station is) are the front runners. I believe West Village is being considered in conjunction with a football stadium attached.

It's down to three sites at the moment. There's more work completed on this project already than most people think.

As long as they are all DT, I'm a happy guy. Firestone park makes me a sad Panda, not a good idea for the city long term to not put the rink in the core.

I'm sure there's a lot of work done on the design/planning end, but I'm more curious to hear if there's been any consensus on who's going to pay for it. If we're talking arena/stadium...that's probably a billion dollar project. I really hope the owners realize there won't be much public support for the city/province paying for it...especially after the flood. They better be ready to fund almost all of it themselves, or we'll be sitting here in the exact same position 5 years from now.

LOL 100% it's going to happen. The bigger question is the location, scope and who's paying what.

I can guarantee that sometime in the future... Calgary will get a new arena to replace the 'dome. Whether or not that will be in our lifetime is the question.

Nope. Even if you are in your 80's it will be in your lifetime. It's more a certainty than the Flames rebuild timeline.

It will happen, but there is still the public portion that's still yet to come which could add a lot more time to the process. It all depends on what their funding plan is...if they approach it Edmonton stylez, it will add easily add a couple of years to the process.

From what has been said so far about the West village location, the main thing that they are wanting from the public is money for cleaning up some contanimated soil and upgrading the surrounding roads. I do not believe the project is looking for help with the funding to build the actual arena/stadium.

As well, I believe part of the reason they are looking at the redevelopment areas is to essentially "piggy back" on the City while it builds infrastructure around it, instead of requiring infrastructure specifically FOR the arena project.
That's usually the problem with new arenas, is they require the City to start new work they hadn't originally planned. This way, the arena project can be fit in with plans that the city is already looking towards.
Or maybe I'm wrong and the arena is going just south of Balzac and taxpayers will be on the hook for 90% of the cost.
Fun!

I'd take that Polak, it could be the difference between an apartment and basement suite!
Also it makes sense that it would be at the West Village location because currently that Sunalta station is kind of a waste and is used less than any other station on the West LRT by a large margin.

Life expectancy of an 80 year old male in Canada is about 7 Years (50% chance). I'd say it's pretty close to even odds of that happening.

The arena looks like its contingent on a successful Olympics bid.
If that's the case then there's a 50/50 chance at best it gets built.
