Another great naval war simulator is Fleet Command from Janes Combat Simulations.
Not many gameplay videos out there from that game, but here's a good one:
This was a pretty simple battle, but there were scenarios where you would have 2 carrier battle groups against each other using air power and subs.
I had that game too, it was a great game. There were some incredibly tough missions. One where you had to escort a ballistic missile sub from the Bangor Maine naval station to deep water and you were being hunted by Akula subs that were faster, just as quiet and could dive deeper then your 688.
That was a really tough mission.

I read (and loved) everything right up to the Bear and the Dragon and then haven't picked him up since. I've heard the Rainbow 6 stuff was pretty good but never got around to picking it up. RIP, Mr. Clancy, you were a great one...

Terrorists devise a scheme to take over a generic industrial compound for ransom under the watchful eye of corrupt US diplomats. The plot twists when the Terrorists threaten to blow up the White House even after their demands are met. Millions of lives are at stake unless a rookie CIA agent eager to prove his worth can overcome his brooding self-doubt and stop the Terrorists once and for all. The movie ends with a mildly comical and/or ironic scene in which the Terrorists blow up or go to prison. Another satisfying tale of political intrigue and personal redemption closes, and we all walk away from this movie a little wiser.
The last one in the Jack Ryan universe that I read was "Teeth of the Tiger", I kind of lost steam after that. Read all the ones previous to that, as well as "Submarine".

I always loved the missions where you had an aircraft carrier. First thing I would do is launch a couple of AWACS aircraft and a couple of F-14 fighters just to be in the air at all times to identify unknown air tracks and shoot down if necessary. Then you would decide what types of planes and armaments they would need, and have them on different levels of alert readiness.
It was cool when you set your battle group frigates to automatically engage incoming missiles. All of the sudden you would have 9 incoming missiles appear on radar and hear the squak "missile away, track 4875" repeatedly.
Sucks that you never got to launch nukes though...
Time to re-read all of his classics in his honour.
A fitting tribute would be a sweet movie or mini-series based off of Red Storm Rising. Make it happen Hollywood!
Unfortunately if HollyWood did make a Red Storm Rising movie, they would screw it up like they did World War Z by focusing the story around a single character.

Communists devise a scheme to steal plans that need to be explained in layman terms for ransom under the watchful eye of corrupt Gypsie nationals. The plot twists when the Communists threaten to unravel the keystone of civilization with wild orgies, unless a sassy cop with street smarts can quell his pride long enough to stop the Communists once and for all. The movie ends with a mildly comical and/or ironic scene in which the Communists blow up or go to prison. heheheh
Drug lords devise a scheme to smuggle an impressive amount of cocaine for ransom under the watchful eye of corrupt German officials (played by Americans with fake German accents). The plot twists when the Drug lords hijack a shipment of nuclear warheads even after their demands are met, unless a sassy cop with street smarts can quell his pride long enough to stop the Drug lords once and for all. The movie ends with a mildly comical and/or ironic scene in which the Drug lords blow up or go to prison. I was running an American task force and got caught in the midway scenario where I decided to do an alpha strike and armed all of my F-18's with ground strike packages and launched a ready group of 12 Tom Cats. While my planes were arming an overwhelming air strike was launched by the Russians that would overwhelm my cap. So I went to rearm the 18's into air to air and launch them.
That took 20 minutes. I beat back the air strike and landed my tom cats to refuel and my f-18's to rearm and another air strike by the Russians had launched from the opposite direction and came in below my radar. They popped up in the last minute and took out two carriers a cruiser and 4 destroyers. I had 1 heavily damaged carrier left and when I decided to fall back closer to one of my bases with ground coverage a sub popped up and put a spread of 5 torpedos into my carrier.
It was a very accurate game.
Harpoon was the same game but less fancy and a little more in depth.
I only got nuclear authorization once when I was ordered to land an assault force in Northern Russia.
The Russians dropped a nuke on my amphibious assault fleets and I suddenly get a message stating that the use of nukes was authorized.
I armed every plan with nukes, took my subs in shore and launched nuke tipped tomahawks from my cruisers. I must have hit the Russian's with about 100 tactical nukes, while I softly waived an American flag and sang America the beautiful.

Maybe his publisher could take some of those great books and put them out in trade paperbacks or hardcovers. Reading one of those classic stories in a tiny little paperback is a pain. Hey it'll make more money, why not.
last night on my way home (in honour of TC), i pulled a crazy ivan on deerfoot southbound......the guy behind did not shut everything down it was a mess.......
