Hard to believe that they still have a lot of cap space. Feaster and Burke should be watching them closely. If they catch fire this year and decide to go for it, they could be a team willing to trade prospects for veterans.

I was reading that Zibanejad was looking pretty good at camp. It would be a shame if he gets buried due to depth.

My thoughts exactly. Apparently Pagaeu and Da Costa outplayed him, but he is an absolute blue chipper in my view.

Aren't they an internal budget team though? If so, the amount of cap space they have is kind of irrelevant.

Oh, maybe. I haven't heard that but it would make sense. Too bad if that is the case though, because they have a team that could be very good soon and if they can't spend, that could be a handicap to their success.

Here's an article from three days ago where Melnyk is saying the team is already over budget for the season.
http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...for-this-year/
Quote:
Though only four NHL clubs have more salary cap space than Ottawa’s $8.2 million, beyond a payroll of about $57 million, Melnyk said his team is “already over budget, I just found out (Thursday).”
So the combination of Zibanejad being waiver-exempt and having a two-way contract might have at least been a factor in his being sent down. Which isn't to take anything away from the performances of Pageau and DaCosta.

When did 'Daddy Warbucks' get tight?

It must be Matt Cooke's fault.

A lot of the older contracts were frontloaded, like Spezza's, while their newer ones like Karlsson's and Cowen's are backloaded. Right now their actual salary payroll is several million less than their cap.

Cowen, Karlsson, Turris and Greening are making a combined 10.5M this year, in a couple seasons from now their contracts balloon up to 18.7M, while Spezza is making 5M this year and will need to be re-signed or let go. Hopefully for the Sens those players continue to develop and earn their future salaries. But if Ottawa's budget isn't much more than 50M in a couple years time they might have some issues retaining their depth, especially if any of their young RFAs earn a big pay check.

When he sold his position in his company for a song and missed its meteoric rise in share price.

I can't believe they would do this publicly. He must be really shook up. Not good for his confidence. They are ruining his career.

I was waiting for that.

Off topic but here is background for people like me who were curious about what Burn_this_city was talking about.

I see. I always knew Melnyk was an idiot.

Not going to happen but......... Baertschi for Zibandjad. Who makes that trade?

Personally I wouldn't as I think Sven's upside is higher as an impact offensive player.

This is clearly another of Melnyk's austerity measures.

Hes saving money on Jersey lettering.

Do you have any idea how much those damned 'Z's cost???

If it were the Flames people on here would be more worried about him being sad than anything hockey related

It's basically a wash and would rather go with the guy we drafted.
