Actually don't mind what they did with Street/Horak.

Give Street a couple of games before he goes back down as a reward of sorts, and then bring Horak back up.

Have 10 games to send him back down without Waivers so give him a look now.

didn't think of Street when I saw that Horak went down. I'm fine with that decision, Street obviously had a fine camp.

Right now, I don't understand how the Flames have actually vetted Colborne's performance versus Horak. Without that, the waiver reason is a very poor reason to move one player. Seems more like a solution to a "problem" they created by bringing in Colborne sight unseen*.

* in comparison to the people in our training camp. I understand Burke has seen him and, as per definition for anyone we acquire, Feaster has had Colborne on his radar for a long time.

Are there any other legal ways out of the AHL for a player that thinks he is being shortchanged by the GM or the unfortunate cap situation and that he could do better with another NHL team?
I like Horak and am rooting for him, but not sure he's been so hard done by yet- heck we could still see him play 60 NHL games this year. He's a 22 year old former 5th rounder still on his ELC who 'only' scored at a .5 PPG pace in the AHL last year- I don't think he'd have a lock on a roster spot on too many NHL teams right now

his options will come to him next year if he's really got a beef- he'll be an RFA and also won't be able to clear waivers

This sort of irks me as while I'll fully concur that Horak isn't a large guy and probably will never surpass 200lbs until he's a couple years older, he is a defence-first centre. He plays a good defensive game. Hartley has praised him on it. So Colborne is taking up a spot to turn into a player that we already have in the system and with more NHL experience.

Personally, I believe Ben Street won the job from Roman Horak.

With Cammalleri injured this created a roster spot open...

When Cammalleri is healthly a decision will need to be made on Monahan.

well sure but if the answer is that the Flames actually see both Colborne and Horak in their future plans (and I don't know if this is true), there was only one way to slice this (with respect to these two players- I guess we could discuss Street vs Horak) and that is to send down Horak. at any rate they obviously liked their chance at a low cost asset grab in Colborne and no point in then blowing that by losing him on waivers two days later

Would Horak be on the roster today if they didn't acquire Colborne? Some are thinking yes, I don't know if I disagree.

That said, Horak will be up soon enough in my opinion.

If Horak can't make this squad, which team is he going to crack? I realize it doesn't quite work like that, but not sure there are many other places he'd have a better shot. Likely just keep working and see how it goes.

Feaster thinks Monahan getting 9 games spread over several months could be beneficial since he gets to spend time practicing and training with the team. Not sure if I agree with that, needs to play some games this year.

His only option is #1, because it's unlikely he would be in the starting on any other line-up except maybe the Panthers. He would have to be an idiot wanting to go to the KHL at his age when he still has a good shot at the NHL.

Colborne is better than Horak imo and is only one year older. Horak will never be a 2nd line player, at least Colborne has a chance to attain that.

It may certainly be that Street won the job.

But I guess my concern is a more general one: getting Colborne the way they did forces them to put him on the roster. So they must have accepted that he's better than someone they sent down*. Then how did they make that decision without actually having Colborne in camp and comparing him to his (now defeated) competition?

I'm not so curious about the specifics (the actual player names) but more the general ethos behind how the team will be selected.

* And let me concede (and dispense) with the view that yes, if you bring in a demonstrably better player like a Datsyuk, then someone is finding their butt in Abby. But I think we can agree that Colborne's NHL future is as murky as our other in house prospects.

The little that I saw of Street, I thought he played well and made more of an impact than Horak. Smaller guy, though, so once Cammalleri is back, he'll be dropped down again. I actually think this was based on "meritocracy" between Horak/Street. Colborne's merit will be proven/disproven in the next few weeks.

I think everybody knows that Colborne had to be on the team because he would not clear waivers. That said by picking him up that meant Horak had to go down or Monahan would not get 9 games.

So basically i don't get how you don't see that trading for Colborne meant one center was going down whether they deserved it or not?

Did Street win a job over Horak?

The flames have said all summer they see Horak as a center and want him to play center. I heard Hartely say he liked Street because he could play all 3 positions. I think Street made the team as a winger. The addition of Colborne meant one center out of Horak and Monahan had to go down.

I saw #39 out there at Heat training camp this morning. He had a full mask on so I thought it was Sieloff, but wasn't too too sure, so I didn't tweet it out.

I also thought of the Panthers. And, yes, I think it would be a better scenario for him.

As for the KHL argument – this is not a choice between NHL and KHL for someone like Horak, but a choice between AHL and KHL. KHL pays more money and provides a better lifestyle to its players than the AHL player lifestyle. I am sure this is a factor for many players.
