The Hockey News scouting report:
Scouting Report
Assets: Is plenty physical and has the projectable size to match. Also moves the puck out of trouble decently.
Flaws: Needs to add even more bulk to his 6-2 frame in order to withstand playing a physical style at the highest level.
Career Potential: Physical depth defenseman with a little upside.
He was the last cut Chicago made, apparently close to making the Hawks

Mike Cadarette@MCaddd2m
Reto Berra is on the ice this morning at #AHLHeat camp.

Guess that makes our goal crease boring and predictable this year. Couple of backups. Reminds me of the Wregget year.

I really don't get the Jackman hate. He can play the game decently, is a good skater for a big man, and is a tenacious 4 liner who will drop the gloves and provides 'truculence'. He isn't a true heavyweight like Mcgratten, but he is a much better hockey player.
For a team that wants more toughness and to be harder to play against, I would be surprised if they get rid of him. And to be clear, in no way is a guy like Horak even competing for the same job; if Horak was 6'3" 210lbs and was physical then he should get the job over Jackman, but they are completely different types of players. Small and moderately skilled is not a great need on this team.

So they should've kept 3 backups instead?
I disagree with Ramo being a backup but what you're saying makes no sense. How is Berra any better?

As opposed to what? 3 backups?
Personally, if Ramo isn't getting in a good zone by January I'd like to see the Flames go after someone like a Nabokov type. Low demand, but good enough to keep us relevant while we hope Gillies or Brossoit develops.
When I look at the way Berra plays, I don't see "starter", but who knows.

If Iginla and others had played with half the heart Jackman did the last few years we wouldn't have missed the playoffs for 4 straight years

If Ramo isn't cutting it partway through I'd rather see them bring up berra than go out and get Nabokov. No point in bringing a guy like that to take time away from (hopefully) improving prospects. And yes, even though Berra and Ramo are a bit older, they are very much prospects. We all know the prime-year curve is skewed to a bit older for goalies than most players.

and if Jackman played with 5% of the skill that some others did, we would have made the playoffs every year he was here...
Point is, Jackman is an easy to replace guy. He isn't really skilled enough to be on a scoring line and he's not really imposing enough to be a decent enforcer. There are many guys who could replace him and I'd much rather have McGrattan on the 4th line and Granlund on the 3rd line.

I saw Jackman in 2 preseason games & he was playing very, very well. He drove hard to the net & threw his body around. I like both Jackman & McGrattan. Inevitably, one of our younger skill guys will be on a line with one of them & I think it will do them some good. When they play their style of game properlt they make a lot of space for their line mates out there.

has anyone thought of the possibility of going out and getting a good young goalie if none of our guys pan out? maybe someone like Reimer could be had?

This. I'm not saying that Berra isn't currently a backup... but at least he's a backup with a future.
I just can't get excited about Ramo nor MacDonald... other than Ramo's sweet, sweet mask.

Young goalies with upside aren't exactly available at your local grocery store.
Besides, the cost of acquiring such a goalie just doesn't make sense for the Flames at this point.

I'm just not sure why you're lumping Ramo in the same conversation as McDonald.
Ramo and Berra are the same age, both have limited NA experience and were great overseas. If you're thinking Berra is a backup with a future, why isn't Ramo?

I get that Mcdonald is a career backup goalie but is Ramo not considered starting goalie potential?
Either way, I dont know how you could find watching Ramo this year boring.
Im excited!
