Pat Steinberg ‏@Fan960Steinberg 5m Burke answers "I'm not sure" when asked what the #Flames have in Sven Baertschi. Says he needs to compete in all 3 zones.

I've kind of felt that Sven isn't a Burke type of player and the fact that he seems a little mentally soft doesnt bode well. Didn't sound very complimentary but Sven can change that by playing well. If not I feel he should be sent down to Abbotsford as I don't think Calgary will be a good place for him to be if he's struggling.

I wonder if Baertschi was one of the players Burke wasn't high on when he got here, I really hope not because I think he's part of the solution

He pretty much looked like that the last conference too. I think that's just his usual "hit with a red 2x4" look.

I don't think we have to worry any time soon about Sven getting shipped out as long as Feaster is the GM. If the day comes that Burke fires him then all bets are off.

Im really tired of these msut compete in all 3 zones talk. Guys like Baertschi game are meant to be developed as offensive game breakers. They arent there to block shots, be defensive leaders etc.

Do you really think guys like Patrick Kane, Stamkos, Girouix, etc are told to be "solid in all 3 zones". No they are told to score. These guys are defensively strong because they play so much offense that the other team struggles to get into the other teams zone.

For guys like baertschi, a good defense should stem from an excellent offensive zone attack.

Wes Gilbertson ‏@SUNGilbertson 2m #Flames Brian Burke on Sven Baertschi: "This is a guy, right now, who's focusing on one area. And even then, sporadically."

Burke on Baertschi, cont.: “There's three zones on the ice ... and I don't see that he's learned to play and compete in two of them.”

Wow pretty harsh. Really sounds like Burke at least wants him down in the AHL.

Starting to become clear with all the comments that IF Sven gets sent down to the minors its going to because the Flames feel he's applying himself selectively at this point.

Doesn't sound to me like Sven has confidence issues, or even that the Flames are worried about his production (or lack of, although that's what Sven seems to focus on), they are worried about him not showing the proper compete level frequently enough or at all parts of the game. It's true, that not all players have to be good in all ends of the ice, and offensive players don't have to be defensive experts always, but every player needs to compete as best they can in all aspects of the game. 20 year old Sven has not eared the right to only play one end of the ice yet (not that I feel any player ever does) so IF that's what's happenning, glad the Flames management all the way up to Burke are letting him know that.

Sounds eerily similar to quotes just before we got rid of St. Louis and Savard.

Yikes, Baertschi is already a guy who comes across a little fragile emotionally (sometimes I think he cares a little too much). Not sure if that's going to go over that great.

Though, hasn't Feaster been more critical of Sven ever since (not coincidentally) Burke got hired? Certainly the reviews and future outlook hasn't been quite as rosy as Feaster talked previously before bringing in his new boss (recall the "untouchables" comment at the end of last season)?

Has Sven suddenly turned into a bad seed over the summer? Maybe hasn't progressed to the blueprint some would want (and that's all behind the scenes anyways, which is a black hole on info and pure speculation for most fans) but I don't doubt that there is some re-aligning in words and expectations when your new boss comes in and sees things differently than you, especially Feaster.

I hope Baertschi uses these comments as "motivation" and doesn't "pout" because of them. From everything we have heard this year, Baertschi has not been very good at training camp, especially after saying last year that "he wants to be the face of the franchise" one day.

Darren Haynes@DarrenHaynes_CP1m
On Monahan, Burke says he's open to keeping him in Calgary but there must be a commitment from the coach to play him enough to warrant it.

Darren Haynes@DarrenHaynes_CP2m
Burke pointed out that going back to junior for another year never hurts a player. If Monahan stays/goes hinges on how he plays coming up.

its not harsh. It might spark Sven to step up. He did have a poor camp... many CPers noticed that. he needs to go balls out.

Interesting ..... when Burke was hired he and Feaster had a conversation about a Flame player and Burke asked Feaster what he thought of this player. Feaster said he was a future cornerstone and Burke said he didn't like him. Obviously the player in question wasn't identified but now I'm wondering if this was in reference to Baertschi ....?

Yeah...not great comments about Sven. Guess we will see how he responds. This will either break him mentally or it will light a fire under his ass.

I think because Sven is one of our top prospects Burke may be trying to light a fire under him rather then letting hype get to the kid by telling him how great he will be. Better to be honest than sugar coat it, especially when Sven does appear to have high goals for himself.

When your best players and leaders don't compete in all 3 zones, we get what we've had here the last 5 years.
