i have had the good fortune of attending a couple of events in lower suites.....it is some kind of awesome. especially when the food and drink is coming non-stop.
I would think that there are likely only about 10 or 15 [posters on this board that could afford to pay for one of these bad boys out of their own pocket and still have money left to replace thier mercedes SUV everytime it needs and oil change.....

There are some O&G companies, of course, but not all. These are some of the current lessees of the lower level suites:
Calgary Flames - The Owner's Suite - the nicest one of them all with a private dining room in the back.
City of Calgary - the first one next to Section 103 - used at the discretion of Council and City GM's.
The Sponsor's Suite right next to the Owner's Suite - used to be Pengrowth, now could be Scotiabank's, but I am not sure if they had one before.
Lehigh/Inland Cement
Lafarge Cement
Calgary Herald
Calgary Sun
Brookfield
Jayman/Gienow (shared)
Rosza Family - the only suite that I know is leased not by a corporation (there could be more).
BMO Bank of Montreal
Dentons Law
BDP Law
Flames Alumni Suite - this is the suite behind the attack zone, where Lanny Mcdonald and Jim Peplinski can be seen most of the time along with other former Flames players. Not sure, but this could be Peplinski's own company's suite.

I think there is a entertainment tax refund businesses can use to get back some of the costs.
Not really.
Businesses get taxed on income (revenues minus business expenses), basically at 25%. But, for some expenses like meals and entertainment, such as Flames tickets, food, etc, only 50% of the expense can be subtracted to get to your income figure. You'll hear people say companies get a 50% writeoff, but it isn't as good as it sounds.
For example, if your revenues are $50,000, and your only expense is $20,000 in your food and tickets at a Flames game, your the income you'd get taxed on is actually $45,000, so you'd pay $10,000 in taxes.
If instead you spent that $20,000 on office supplies, or your employees' salaries or whatever, the full amount could be deducted, and you'd only pay $7,500 in taxes.
This thread is a great example of why the Flames shouldn't come begging the taxpayer to build a new arena. They could have twice the suites available and still have a waiting list?

There is so much wrong with this post. The City of Calgary is absolutely a business. If you don't run it as such, you end up like Detroit, and go bankrupt. They may not have traditional products and/or services, but they still have over one million customers and stakeholders.
If I'm not mistaken, the Dome is owned by the City of Calgary, who leases it to the Saddledome Foundation, which is managed by the Calgary Flames. They likely don't pay for the tickets, based on this arrangement.
I'm going to guess they use it to bring key figures to the city, to woo potential high ranking employees to come work for the municipal government, entertain corporate executives that they hope to bring their corporate head office to Calgary, etc.

I see your point and would love to know the truth behind this. I will file a FOIP request and post back in this thread when the city responds.

Considering the City owns the Saddledome, I would have no idea why in the world they WOULDN'T have a suite. Either way, it's not like they're paying someone to use it every year, they own the building.
I don't wish to contradict anything CaptainYooh said, but I am not sure the city itself has a suite. I do know that the Saddledome Foundation has a lower bowl suite, and I believe it is by section 105, the last one at that end of the horse shoe. I have seen civic pols there (as at least one Alderman is on the board, the city having three seats on the Foundation)
Most folks know that the owners suite is the large one at centre ice on the player's benches side, but not as well known is that several of the suites on that side are also owned by companies owned by the Flames owners. Large sponsors also have suites, such as Molson (or now Labatt's) and Coke, who have a suite by section 117.
More suites than one would think are not totally owned by one company...lots are (or at least have been in the past) subleased for 5 or 10 games a year.
Many of the suites have nameplates on them denoting at least the primary suite owner. Maybe one of the many 1%ers who have seats in the club can go around one game and jot them down...*G*

Uh-huh. Corporations, huh? You mean CEOs and other corporate executives who use the corporation as their own personal bank account instead of for the benefit of all stakeholders including shareholders and its employees.
And don't forget...who are the shareholders?; many shares are held by pension funds, so the owners of these companies are actually pensioners. And who are the largest pensioners in the country? OMG GOVERNMENT WORKERS!!!!!
So arguably, all the boxes should be filled by government workers.

That's the one. Saddledome is owned by the City and leased to the Saddledome Foundation, which has the right to this suite as a manager on behalf of the landlord secured through the lease arrangement with Calgary Flames organization. Ald. Ray Jones and City Manager Owen Tobert are on the Board of Directors of the Foundation.
I think that rather that admonish corporate involvement or analyze write off it can be looked at as a participation in a sports tax that bolsters have a NHL team in the City of Calgary. Corporate suites are a very good thing and I would further like to see a new arena with far more Corporate seats so that they may help fund the future of this Club and a A+ arena for fans!
