Look at what the Oilers did with their top picks and now they are paying 2 of them $6M this year and another $6M next year with nothing more than a 24 th place finish to show for. I have little to no doubt Monahan will be in line for $5M + after his ELC expires so going back to jr this year, getting traded to a contender, dominating the world juniors is best for both the team and player.
The flames have several young centers they can take a look at this year as well. Colborne, Knight, Reinhart, Horak, Granlund

Agree fully. This is only year 1 of the rebuild. But if he can hangars perform above his age/expectations in his first 9 games then we might have a different story

Who have the Oilers missed out on signing because of those deals? Who have the Oilers had to let go because of salary cap concerns because of those guys?
The ELC concern is overblown. If Monahan plays well enough to earn a big contract then that will be a positive for the Flames going forward. They are highly unlikely to be in a situation where one year is going to make any difference on his contract.
The Flames need to be making decisions based 100% on what is best for his development and not concerned about Monahan being so good that we have to pay him big money one year earlier.

And if I put it in a Flames jersey you'd rail on-and-on about how it is over-rated, will never amount to anything, and how the Flames should have made another post. Then you'll go off on some nutty tangent about how the Flames should have posted about Malcolm Subban, because he one of the top two goaltenders at the WJC, even if stats and performance prove otherwise. Finally you'll tell us about your hevis, what ever that is. Don't go changing moon! Your act is as funny as it is predictable.

Colborne and Kassian seem to be of similar quality and potential.
Imagine if the Flames traded Baertschi for Colborne after Baertschi breaks out with 16 goals and 33 pts in 63 games.
The Flames are setting the ground so that Gaudreau doesn't have to look for another team.
Jankowski, Monahan, Glencross, David Jones, Colborne are potential line mates that Gaudreau will do well with.
I look for Hudler, Cammalleri and Baertschi to exceed exceptions this season as they will have more room and will be able to play harder with their larger linemates creating space for them.
Gone Iginla, Cervenka and Tanguay.... replaced with Colborne, David Jones, Galiardi.
Colborne is that much more NHL ready than Knight.

This post is all over the place. Makes no sense. You really shouldn't be drinking so early in the morning.

Flames using 4th rnders like magic beans - really like this deal.
I actually did an in depth article/interview with Colbourne back in 2009 when he was 1st drafted in the 1st by the Bruins - really impressed with him then. Big forward just needs more time to make an impact. Once he puts it all together, we'll all rejoice this deal.

What is the probability that he puts it all together? I think it's a matter of giving him a chance with the right linemates. I saw a mock lineup that had him with Baertschi and Jones and thought that looked like a good line that could produce some positive results for all players involved. Then you have to take into consideration the coaching staff and where their heads are. Do we think they will show the patience to give these young guys the chances they need to succeed?

Interesting to reflect back on just 1 of the questions I asked him:
Quote:
"CR: Bruins Assistant GM Jim Benning stated when he drafted you that it was for the player you would be in four years. Do you have a timeline in mind on reaching the NHL?
JC: As soon as I am ready. I have dreamed my entire life of playing in the NHL, and as soon as both myself and the Bruins think that I am ready I will be there."

Woke up to this trade, and although I've never seen the kid play once, I'm still extremely happy with it. Size, youth, and skill for a 4th round pick. I know nothing about his hockey IQ or other intangibles, but I would be shocked if they acquired him without those things in place.
It is no coincidence that the first trade we make after acquiring Brian Burke is a major win for us. Feaster was doing well before that, but this is a great deal.
I know we all assume this is a lost season, but there is a lot of good potential coming down the pipe in a season or two at most.
The trade deadline will see another round of veteran jettisoning for sure with all the young players ready to break into the big time.
And while we have drastically improved the forwards, especially at center ice, I would really like to see some trades for defensemen soon...

Part 2 of the above interview with Colbourne, who I dubbed "JoeCo"
Link to THW Rapid Fire questions
Here was the 1st rapid fire to get his time in the hot seat started:
Quote:
"CR: I have seen you referred to as “Big Joe” in the Denver Post. Can I call you “JoeCo”? Do you have any other nicknames?
JC: Jumbo, JC – quite a few actually."

So for a 4th round pick we get a young, massive, former first round centre with good hockey IQ?

I am late to the party but read the first couple pages of this thread. Like most i think this is a good, low risk move. The best part of the deal for me is that the Flames did not have to take Liles as part of the trade. Thought Edmonton would trade for him.

This crap is getting tiresome and starting to put a dim light on this forum... Enough of the random bullcrap, calling guys out for whatever reason just because you dont like them. Im not necessarily a fan of a lot of posters comments, but I respect the point of this forum. Being a place where Flames fans and hockey fans in general can express their opinion and have a hockey discussion.. STFU and use the ignore poster button.
This stuff is completely out of hand, border lines internet bullying and is a complete waste of time. Grow up and move on. Dont like a poster, ignore him. Dont like a comment, bring an intelligent argument or just let it go...

Hopefully he takes the opportunity and runs with it. 4th round pick can easily be recouped at the deadline as guys like Stajan, Cammalleri, and Stempniak will bring back a surplus of picks.

Great move by the Flames IMO. Good use of a 4th, nice asset accumulation. Not sure why anyone is concerned about impacts on any of our other prospects this year. It might not be perfectly fair that we have to keep Colborne up this year, but Flames should be doing everything to add to the prospect depth and increasing the likely hood that some of these guys work out a few years down the road.
This year is likely a chuck away for this team, so anything that adds to depth of prospects at any position is a very smart move. Flames have a done a good job of that this offseason, nice move.

According to Leafs fan, Colbourne did not have a good camp and was badly outplayed by most of their prospects. They say he doesn't have the drive, doesn't battle hard enough for the puck, takes shifts off and is average defensively. This description reminds me of what Nemisz brought to camp this year. I hope they're wrong, but they're apparently happy to get anything for him at this point. Two NHL teams have given up on him already, maybe this is the wake up call he needs.
I agree with those who think Burke had a hand in this, Burke usually has a good eye for talent. Hope he's right about Colbourne.

Hey we've had our share of prospects that couldn't do jack here go elsewhere and become good players, so maybe it's our turn this time . And with Burke helping evaluate talent I'm more optimistic that it could happen.
Still, even if he doesn't amount to anything, still a good risk reward move by the Flames.
