Maybe or may not. But I suspect he isn't in the long term plans for the flames and their rebuild. Even without Colborne his spot on the roster will be filled with the likes of Knight, Arnold, Monahan and a couple seasons down the road Jankowski. No room for him going forward. At least now he has value with his play last year and entering the final year of his deal. If you could move him now and make room with younger cheaper options you do it. It's year one, best time to throw the 22-25 year older into the deep end and see if they sink or swim.

Agree. They will keep Stajan till the deadline. Up his points, give him minutes, let some salary get chewed up and then flip him

I can't believe so many people want to keep Monahan up for the entire season; have we really learned nothing from the Oilers in terms of rushing first year players up to the big leagues? He's had a good camp sure, and is already one of our better options at center, but that's not saying a whole much considering who he's competing against. Why waste a year on his entry level deal, when the Flames won't be competitive for a few years?
I know us Flames fans want there to be a reason to be invested in the season (Monahan's development would do that), but I am not in favor of it. Maybe if he had a mind blowing camp, or if he was a Crosby, Malkin, or Kane in their rookie seasons, but he's not at that level yet.

And all appear to be well spend. - Florida had to move Knight or lose him for nothing. He wanted to be a Flame so we got him for much less than he is worth.
- Toronto had to move Colborne, keep him on the NHL roster, or lose him on waivers. There weren't many teams that could afford to keep a tweener with 16 NHL games on the active roster. Calgary was one of the few so we got him for less than he is worth.
- Galiardi was an RFA and not a fit in San Jose. He really wanted to play in Calgary. We got him for a little less than he is worth.
Honestly you need to look pretty hard not to like any of these deals. All of them added good young depth to the Flames for a bare minimum of cost. All of them were good deals value wise. All of them fill roles that need filling.
When you get a player like Colborne for almost nothing and you have the C depth in Calgary like we do than you are happy about the move. People need to stop trying so hard to hate everything.

This trade seemed like a matter of time. I like it
Colborne, Galliardi, and Knight for 3 4ths not bad at all

Just think of it... Colborne got traded to Calgary because the Leafs has to keep a spot for Mason Raymond. I was hoping the Flames would have pick him in 2008 NHL Draft but he was picked 10th pick ahead of when the Flames chose Greg Nemisz.
I have no idea why people thinks Matt Stajan will stay as #1 or #2 Centre all season. Stajan is effective as a 3rd line C and not as 1st or 2nd line. I am also sure Monahan will stay in Calgary either for 9 games or a full season.
6 players to go and I believe it is going to be Reto Berra, Blair Jones, Ben Street, Chris Breen maybe Horak unless Cammy is hurt and will miss more than a game.

That's five. I imagine Sieloff will go to Abbotsford as well. My bet is that Breen and Cammy go to IR.

I think they keep Breen up as the 7th and waive Smith, once Breen is healthy.

Yep, I can handle the Flames trading fourth round picks for first round players all day long. Even if this does not work out, they need to keep on doing things like this.

I don't think the coaching staff has any idea who will be in which C spot a month into the season. I think there is a legitimate opportunity for Colborne, Backlund, Monahan, Stajan, or even a call up like Knight, Horak, etc to claim a spot.
If Stajan plays like he has in the preseason and one of the kids doesn't step up and steal his spot I could definitely see Stajan sign an extension. The guy is only 29. And while the Flames have a lot of kids they would like to see step up none of those kids have stepped up yet. If they don't signing Stajan is a lot cheaper then trading for another player to fill the role.

I don't think anyone a day or two would of thought we could of got Colburn for just a fourth or without taking on JML's contract so quit the bitchin and speculation !! This was a hell of a trade so deal with it. Management is doing a great job bringing in young talent. Would you choose Colburn in the 4th round ? I know I would.

On a side note, I don't think Stajan is part of the long term plans.

Well, our last four 4th round picks have been Ramage, Arnold, Gaudreau and Kulak, and I'm not sure I would trade any of them straight up for Colbourn, especially since he has to clear waivers to be sent down (which none of the others would). Really hope that Burke has a good read on him at this point, because I'm not confident this trade will pay dividends in the long run.

I don't know much about Colbourne. Has he just not lived up to expectations considering where he was drafted?

I think it's time they give Breen a serious look in the bigs. I think he may be getting stale in the AHL. Time to see what we have on our hands.

No one over the age of 27 should be considered in our long term plans. So that takes a lot of guys off the list. The "long term" being the next 5-7 years.
Too many 30 year olds. But these guys are still in their primes so I hope they rack up some good point totals this season and score us another 1st pick or two at the deadline so we can go into this draft as loaded as the last.
Ekblad and a high end RWer would be an exceptional catch.
I'd be thinking about that "franchise" guy in 2015, when that guy named Connor McDavid will be up for grabs.
