I watched it in a pub in London, Ontario with a bunch of Western students. We all went nuts and sang Oh Canada. The following weekend, there was a big house party called "Thanks A Bunch Ben Johnson". Oh, how we turned on him.
the only difference between Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis is Ben got caught.
6 of the 8 sprinters in that final were caught doping at some point. That whole era of sprinting is pretty much the equivalent of baseball a few years ago.
I love how Lewis still denies doping. Its like the whole Lance Armstrong thing. At the elite level of athletics if everyone else is doping and you win, it is almost certain that you are doping too.

That whole era? More like sprinting since is the equivalent of baseball a few years ago and now.
Look at the size and definition of the present sprinters now vs. that video clip from the 80s. Yes, I know training has improved, but these were world class athletes in the late 80s/early 90s.
Most upper end athletics, of any kind, have become a contest about how well your body reacts to performance enhancing drugs.

I don't disagree with you, it just seems like that era was particularly dirty in hindsight. Clearly sprinting has had it's issues since then....which is why part of me is waiting for Usain Bolt to inevitably fail a test. Not really fair to Bolt, as he has never failed one, but with the sports history it's hard not to be skeptical of anyone with success.
I do love the 100m though....it's one of the best parts of the Olympics. Donovan Baileys performance in Atlanta was just as exciting as Johnson in Seoul.
