IPCC report: Scientists are 95% certain humans are responsible for climate change
Most comprehensive report on climate change ever leaves little doubt that greenhouse gases are causing the world to heat up

http://www.independent.co.uk/environ...e-8843573.html

The degree of certainty leaves little doubt that greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane are responsible for climate change and compares to a finding of 90 per cent certainty in the previous - fourth - assessment six years ago. This, in turn, was a significant increase on the 66 per cent certainty reached in 2001's third assessment and just over 50 per cent in 1995.

AR5 has 840 main authors recruited from 38 of the IPCC's 195 member countries, with British and American scientists making the biggest contribution.

At more than 3,000 pages, the report is so big that it will be released in three parts over the next 14 months. The first part, released today, covers the physical science of climate change. The second instalment will concentrate on the impacts of climate change and how to adapt to them, while the third will examine ways to curb the warming.

As with the other IPCC reports, AR5 is a synthesis of the findings of thousands of peer-reviewed research papers from the past few years. It comes at a crucial time in global climate change politics since it will be the last IPPC report published before the Paris summit in 2015, when the world's governments have pledged to reach hugely ambitious and legally binding targets to reduce their emissions in a bid to limit global warming to 2C compared to pre-industrial levels.

Today US Secretary of State John Kerry backed the report's findings, and pledged action on cutting emissions.

God said in the bible that he wouldn't destroy the world again after doing so in Noah's flood.

So we don't have to worry about climate change.

LOL

The sad part is that a US politician actually uses that argument to oppose climate science.

Quote:
GOP. Rep. John Shimkus, in a 2009 congressional hearing, cited the Book of Genesis as evidence that climate change is a hoax, pointing out that God promised Noah that he won’t destroy the Earth because of man’s wickedness. Shimkus was subsequently rewarded with the Chairmanship of the powerful Energy & Commerce subcommittee on the environment.

For which he was promoted... yay right wing!

Well... I don't agree with these "scientists". After all, it's pretty cold outside right now!

A more logical explanation is that this large body of scientists from around the world are in on the conspiracy to move us towards a North American Union where they control the means of production. Don't get vaccinated!

http://shimkus.house.gov/

It is acutally the subcommittee on Environment and the Economy. Someone is going to have to explain to me how any one subcommittee is 'powerful' when compared to the rest of the Congressional subcommittees. Finally, where's the evidence he was rewarded with the appointment based on his citation of Genesis as the author implies?

Look, I think such statements are ridiculous and kooky; but lets not let our biases cloud the truth. Whoever wrote the portion that you quoted is editorializing to make it sound worse than it really is.

Well he did say this:

He's in politics isn't he? On a senate subcommittee? He should be committed to the fringe elements of society, not in federal politics influencing decisions on things like climate change.

http://www.climatechange2013.org/ima...d27Sep2013.pdf

Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased.

Total radiative forcing is positive, and has led to an uptake of energy by the climate system. The largest contribution to total radiative forcing is caused by the increase in the atmospheric concentration of CO2 since 1750.

Human influence on the climate system is clear. This is evident from the increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, positive radiative forcing, observed warming, and understanding of the climate system.

Continued emissions of greenhouse gases will cause further warming and changes in all components of the climate system. Limiting climate change will require substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.

He's on a House subcommittee. Big difference.

Look, I'm not saying I like the guy or that I agree with him. What I'm saying is that the author of the material that Flashpoint quoted was editorializing and insinuating that Shimkus' citation of the Bible got him named to the chair of a 'powerful' subcommittee. Can't his comments just stand on their own for our judgement without having to throw in all of this exaggeration to make it seem more important that it really is?

Not Flashpoint's fault at all, mind you.

CNN has a great article up about the affects being felt in a small Inupiat village in Alaska....which is only one of many dealing with similar issues.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/27/opinio...html?hpt=hp_t2

My wife is 1/4 Inupiaq. I'm not sure if Inupiat=Inupiaq, though Inupiaq are from the same area of Alaska. My wife's Grandmother grew up in Nome.

At what point does the IPCC stop focusing on the cause of climate change and switch their focus to solutions and tracking progress?
Debating the cause seems to have distracted everyone from debating the solution.

You can not hope to ask for money for solutions when people don't think it's a human problem...

I think there will be that shift now. IIRC, this may be the last AR report.

The Summary for Policy Makers is now linked in the first post.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPCC_Fi...essment_Report

As of August 2011, the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) was already under way. It will consist of three Working Group (WG) Reports and a Synthesis Report, to be completed in 2013 and 2014.
  • WG I: The Physical Science Basis – mid September 2013, Summary for Policymakers published 27 September.[5]
  • WG II: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability – mid March 2014
  • WG III: Mitigation of Climate Change – early April 2014
  • AR5 Synthesis Report (SYR) – October 2014
