It is an agreement the CHL and the NHL designed to protect the CHL's star players from being removed from junior as soon as they are drafted and being put into the AHL.

The CHL is the primary provider and development league for future NHLers. The NHL has a vested interest in keeping the CHL healthy.

I think monahan gets his 9 games then is sent down with Knight/Reinhart called up.

I would send down Jones Street and Jackman and McGrattan being the 13th forward. I wouldn't have minded Knight/Reinhart over Horak though as well.
A) No way the Stajan line gets broken up. Not at the start of the season anyways.
B) D. Jones is one of two RW on the team. He will play RW, not LW.
C) Baertschi isn't good enough for the second line.
D) Monahan isn't good enough for the 3rd line.
E) Galliardi is too good for the 4th line.

Realistically we're going to have three 2nd lines, and a 3rd/4th hybrid.

Street and B.Jones should most definitely be heading down soon. Breen too, but should definitely get a call up this season. Unfortunately that he was injured through this camp.

It's strange that 9 games still seems the expectation here for Monahan. If they feel he's ahead of Knight and Reinhart now, and he performs up to/above expectations through his 9 games, why would they swap him for Max or Corban after a couple weeks?.. Unless they think Corban is ready but just want to get him some seasoning while making space for Monahan and his temporary stint here. But if they have made cuts based on perceived NHL readiness, wouldn't they rather utilize the more NHL ready player (Monahan) for the 3rd center beyond 9 games? Based on camp I think he clearly a cut above Corban at this point. Didn't see enough of Reinhart to judge on his part. We'll see, but I think chances are on his side to stick here.

With Jones, Street, Seiloff and Breen cut,

McGratton, Jackamn, and one of OBrien or Smith Healthy Scrathes,

And Ramo in net, the average Ave of the Flames' dressed lineup (12F, 6D, 1G) would be:

26.86 years

It's part of the NHL-CHL transfer agreement that has been in place for years.

The NHL provides compensation to the CHL for players who make it to the NHL from the CHL system. The CHL invests that compensation into its development system, which it uses to produce better NHL players.

One of the main draws of the CHL is that it provides an opportunity for fans in smaller communities to watch future NHLers just a year or two before they're playing in the NHL. Requiring NHL teams to return under-20 CHL sourced players to the CHL helps CHL teams sell tickets, which helps keep the teams viable, and also ensures a higher-quality of competition in the CHL for those players who haven't yet been drafted.

Cammallieri-Backlund-Hudler (2A:Most Offensive Line)

Glencross-Stajan-Stempniak (2B:Gets the toughest match-ups)

Baertschi-Monahan-D.Jones (3A:Young guys get the bigger Jones on their line and most favourable matchups)

Galliardi- Horak- Bouma (McGrattan/Jackman) (3B: 2nd Third line that you can trust to play minutes, Galliardi moves to center and McGratton/Jackman come into the lineup when more size is needed)

No top line talent on that team but potential to be a hard working group that can get all 4 lines to contribute. Probably won't win a lot of games but hopefully can keep it close.

Would be better balanced if we could move one of Hudler/Cammallieri at some point this season, having both of those guys needing top six minutes creates a log jam of smaller forwards. Baertschi and Hudler can also be flipped in my line-up.

Hmmmm... Sven may have ##### the bed here. He may be the odd man out when Hudler & Cammalleri return! Personally I'd rather see one of those 2 traded, but Baertschi hasn't done himself many favours in preseason.

Forwards-wise the lineup looks more balanced without him:

Glenncross Stajan Stempniak
Cammalleri Backlund Jones
Galiardi Monahan Hudler
Bouma Horak McGrattan/Jackman

A) It's a new year, there are new guys, there'll be new chemistry. They were good last year, but not awe-inspiring by any stretch.
B) Correct.
C) If he's not going to get top6 minutes he might as well play in Abbotsford. If it's more of a 1a/b/c 4 set up then it's just a matter of what order you write them in.
D) If he's not good enough for the 3rd line he should go back to Ottawa. I bet he gets 9 games and they figure that out first though.
E) Hasn't shown it in my opinion. If they want him at C, and Monahan's up, then that's his spot. Otherwise he can be on the 3rd line wing.

If Baertschi is the odd man out, then you trade the other men.

I will be furious if he's not getting significant minutes this season.

Knight is better at center than Horak.

Baertschi will 100% be on the team. I think the only option is to trade either Galliardi or Hudler to make a spot for him. Maybe Jones, but they need that size/grit in the lineup, and I doubt anyone will take his cap hit anyways.

Glencross - Stajan - Stempniak
Baertschi - Backlund - Cammalleri
Galliardi / Hudler - Monahan - Jones
Bouma - Horak - McGrattan / Jackman

I can't get behind the other stuff a bit, but I completely disagree with this. Don't even know how you came to that conclusion.

That does actually look like a much better lineup without awkwardly fitting Baertschi in. The only scenario I could see Baertschi fitting is if you changed it to this:

Glenncross Stajan Stempniak
Cammalleri Backlund Hudler
Baertschi Monahan Jones
Bouma Horak Galiardi/McGrattan

Even then, that 2nd line looks a little soft

Hopefully B. Jones and Street are sent down soon not a fan of either. I like the lines SuperMatt suggested

I could do without another season of Jackman, but I guess he'll probably stay. Boo-urns.

Teams usually just keeps 13 forwards and 7 defensemen or not even. If they keep 13 forwards then we will see Blair Jones and Ben Street being sent down and the other will be Horak. Horak will be the first call-up especially if the Flames only give Monahan the 9-games. If they decide to keep 14 forwards then we will see Horak, McGrattan, Jackman alternating the healthy scratch.

Anyways, any ideas on the final Heat lineup, assuming Ward doesn't put players like Reinhart on the 4th line again (luckily there is no Kolanos or Walter to take minutes from younger players this year).

This is what I'd have:

Ferland - Knight - Hanowski
Granlund - Reinhart - Horak
Elson - Street - Jooris
Bancks - Olson - Nemisz

Wotherspoon - Cundari
McKelvie - Ramage
Martin - Lamb

Brossoit
Ortio

I like that lineup. It will definitely require that we only carry 7D and 2G though, which means one of the heads will need to get chopped from the 3-headed goalie monster.

Galliardi isn't too good for anything and if Baertschi and Monahan aren't good enough as you say (which isn't true) there isn't anyone there to take their place that are good enough anyways.

Hartley told reporters on Monday that Baertschi isn't a lock to make the team.

Just saying...
