Please, Kessel just pushes him away and Scott's gloves come off instantly. The only thing Kessel did wrong was line up beside the gorilla in the first place.

And if that "spear" was worthy of suspension then we may as well start suspending guys for face-washes.

What a dumb way to set a precedent.
It is absolutely incredible - mind-bottling - that the NHL correlates punishment to injury level.

Gob-smackingly stupid

I thought that had been apparent for some time.

I hope he said that he has no regrets, wished he hurt him and would do it across his teeth instead if given the chance.

League should feel the pressure to find a way to make sure mcgratton et al do the policing. Maybe allow a rule that one player is allowed to come off the bench to deal with this kind of situation. And stiff penalties for coaches if there is a fight on the next play after or fight. These ideas might not be right but you get the idea. I don't like goons but they seem to be a necessity.

Missing the rest of pre-season for a player of Kessel's caliber is not a punishment, its a vacation.

This will give Kessel more time to watch his favorite NHL team, the Winnipeg Jets!

hahahahaha, oh man. The crazy extremes some people go to in justifying their position is hilarious.

Why is that? You know the real world works the same way, right?

That second stick swing should have gotten him 5 regular season games. Hadn't even seen his stickwork against Philly before this. What a joke.

Not enough, but it's not far. Give him 5 (3pre, 2reg) and call it a day. He uses his stick a little too frivolously for my taste. I'd hate to be a Kessel fan, it must be hard not to lose at least a little bit of respect for him after that silly display.

I'd say the same about being a Scott fan, but I'm not sure he has any.

That's a strawman. Teams do and have been fined for gooning it up unnecessarily, and that has nothing at all to do with the "legality" of fighting.

So if Hartley sends out McGrattan to line up beside Mcintyre, and they fight, Hartley deserves a fine?

Just not sure where the line is.

I'm trying to track down examples of when the league fined someone for "gooning it up", but I can't find any...

Surprised he got anything. I don't think three whacks to the shin pad deserves a suspension, and the league doesn't seem to suspend spears anymore.

We'll hear lots of hype about these games but the NHL will send a memo to the teams the day before and there won't be any drama in the game at all.

snore fest city, like always in the aftermath of these sorts of things.
