Are the next round of cuts after tonight's game?

You mean 18 year old 3rd round picks tend not to be NHL ready defenders? It's not like 22nd overall picks, which are historically surefire Hall of Fame players who step right in and dominate? Why are my expectations so out of whack? Did you do this to me?

If the decision to keep Sean Monahan had to be made today, Jay Feaster says the kid would stay. #sportsnet

Nice. Monahan is probably thinking " I'd be on the team for the year if it wasn't for the stupid 9 game rule".

Only 2 games left in the pre-season? I doubt much will change between now and Thursday. Tonight will be a big game for him playing against the Rangers squad that is almost all NHLers.

Feaster also mentioned that Ferland, Knight and Horak were the other youngsters that have impressed him the most.

Monahan dominating faceoffs today:
Kristen Odland @KristenOdlandCH 41s Watching @NHLFlames centre Sean Monahan take faceoff drills this morning ... kid won almost every one of them. Super strong in the circle.

If Ferland, Knight, Monahan and Horak are all the roster on opening night, I'll be incredibly happy. A good mix of youth with potential to be more than the 4th line fair we've seen over the past few years.

What? The nine game rule makes it more likely for him to play any regular season games in Calgary this year, let alone the full season. It gives them the ability to see how he'll handle full NHL competition and determine if he is truly ready. Without the nine game cushion, they'd be less likely to commit to a full season for him coming out of camp.
Keep in mind that Feaster is making that statement with the full knowledge that they have the nine "free" games available to them.

It's the opposite...if the 9 game rule didn't exist, the second he made the team out of training camp they would burn up a year on his contract. That makes it very unlikely any team giving a chance on anything less than a bonafide NHL prospect if they don't have to.
With it, they give him 9 games to show his stuff in the actual NHL before they have to commit to him.
I'm just glad it's looking more and more like he'll get at least his 9 game showing.

@darenmillard: With Jay Feaster on hc@noon, sure sounds like the goalie battle is a two horse race. Team not overwhelmed by the shape of Joey Macdonald

I heard Joey Mac read Turk Broda's book and came into camp in great shape.

The longer camp goes and the more I hear about Monahan from the coaches, the more convinced I am he's here for the whole season anyway.

Unless Monahan drops the ball entirely here, then you can book him down the middle for the season.
But we need to remember that the competition instantly gets more difficult tonight. Then again when the regular season starts. I'm curious to see if he can still be effective against regular NHLers. Will be ecstatic if he can still play a strong and responsible game.

I don't think Knight has really been a standout player but what do I know, I didn't just trade my 4th round pick for him.

Ramo and Berra are the right choices. Macdonald is a known commodity. His ceiling isn't worth the roster spot.
