Well I am curious as to what you meant....i mean how do you get anyone out of the game in "any fashion".
Cant legislate them out as teams can sign whomever they like to play.
So beyond that, not sure what other means there are to get those guys out for good, short of banning fighting alltogether which will never happen because the fans simply dont want it that way.
I'm not sure if it's cute or creepy that you spend so much time thinking about me

Rare NHL full line brawl. Always entertaining for a fan like myself. Scott should have and probably did expect things to get out of control instantly when that goof took on non fighter Kessel.
Great to see the fans get right into the action.
Instant rivalry for the season between these 2 rosters this season.
This is why it is so crucial Grats is on the Flames. Not just an Enforcer but overall team protection.
I'd be a lot less judgemental of Carlyle if he didn't dress two useless goons on a regular basis. Carlyle likes to use intimidation when it suits him but when it doesn't he tries to chicken out of it by matching up his star player against a player he knows is being put out there for retribution. Then Kessel pokes the bear literally instead of trying to defuse the situation.
That's a good point, a fairly hypocritical stance to take.
I don't get your last line though. Are people really looking at that little paw Kessel gives as 'poking the bear'? That looks like, 'you just said you're going to crush my skull and I'm terrified so please get away from me' more than anything.

Why are people saying that Scott is twice his size? Yes he is 6'8" and probably over 250 but Kessel is 6' and over 200 lbs. it's not like he was beating Cammy or someone smaller.
He wouldn't have "died". I would rather see him turtle than start slashing and 2 mins later spear the guy. It is a bunch of crap. Kessel deserves a suspension.
Scott wasn't right to go after him and shouldn't even be playing hockey, IMO but what he did isn't necessarily against the rules.

Ohhh councillor...once again obfuscating and deflecting. Feel free to answer when you actually have one though.
Warrener on the fan this AM surprised me when he said "Scott went after the right guy, why would he waste his time with another enforcer"...which coming from a guy like him who played the game the way he did is a bit stunning. he went on to explain his reasoning and it was hard to argue actually...though i still dont think a guy like Kessel should ever have to actually drop the gloves...just skate away from the guy if need be, but dont start with the nonsense of swinging sticks wildly.
Kessell has an in-person hearing with Shanahan later today apparently.
Toronto is going to be without 2 of their top 6 forwards due to suspensions, Kessel is suspended indefinitely as well in the NHL rulebook it says a player who receives a match penalty for a deliberate attempt to a injury or who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner is suspended indefinitely.
I would like to know what your take on Devane, a 6'5 230 pound goon, with no hockey ability what so ever, beating the crap out of 6'0 185 pound Tropp, who was a 2nd year pro out of college, where they don't fight! See a similarity there?
A number of ridiculous aspects to this part of your post. Let's count them down:
1) Tropp was game for that fight, he didn't get jumped, he didn't get goaded into it, they went right off the draw.
2) Tropp held his own in that fight. He didn't get pummeled, it was probably a draw or close loss for him until he got caught at the end.
3) Tropp is no angel, and he drops the gloves plenty. 9 fights in the AHL in 10-11. 4 in the AHL and 2 in the NHL in 11-12. 1 in the AHL last year. I also watched the kid play regularly in college as a former MSU season ticket holder. He spent plenty of time running around and mixing it up, so don't try to paint him as some lightweight who got bullied.
Oh yeah, he also did this:
Note the part where his own teammate gives him a shove to stop him from delivering another 2 hander to a guys head.
So let's please stop with the idea that there was something that occurred that needed a response. This was a lame premeditated fight that unfortunately ended in an injury. I like Tropp, cheered for him for years and hate that he's hurt, but nothing about that fight justifies any response from Buffalo.

Just watched the clip after reading the thread. I was totally expecting worse slashes from Kessel. I think where he slashed him he could have wacked at 100% of his potential wacking power and it wouldn't have hurt. Looks like it was a 30%. Like the impact on the pad of a light wrister from the point.
It wasn't high at all, no risk of hitting face, what am I missing??? Those were barely 2 minute penalty type slashes. A crosscheck in front of the net by a defenceman trying to clear out the crease would hurt and could do way more damage than those.
I'm sure Kessel is really saddened that some may think he is dirty now. I am sure throughout his career he has been explicitly instructed to do whatever you need to do to protect yourself from the big dumb unskilled oafs who are trying to hit him. I bet he has had this happen to him since he was 10 years old. If I was his father I would say that you do whatever and I mean whatever it takes to protect yourself from big dumb idiots.
Or you just turtle, and don't risk getting suspended or injuring someone. Problem solved.
Scott punching your equipment while you turtle isn't going to hurt you.

Well what's the point in entertaining that garbage from the Sabres? Put a guy like Kessel out there with the expectation that Scott has enough brain cells to remember that part of 'the code' that says goons like him don't go after guys like Kessel, and get on with actually playing hockey.
I guess I just don't understand the point of Carlyle taking that gamble. It was a pre-season game.........the points don't count towards anything. When you see one of the biggest goons in the league on the ice right after a scrap I don't think that was the right time to gamble that nothing was going to happen to your best forward. Put out some minor league scrubs or 4th liners, whatever. But to gamble with your best forward? I just don't see the point in taking that risk. It obviously didn't pay off.

The slash making contact with Scott wasnt high...no. But watch the takeaway as he prepares to hit him....head height. Extremely dangerous.

Yeah I see your point. I don't know, maybe he's thinking that he doesn't really have anyone he can counter Scott with, so he puts out a guy he figures there's no way he'll jump. Throwing some poor sap out there to get pummelled doesn't really seem like the greatest move either.
At the end of the day I just think it's ridiculous he even had to make that decision.

My thinking was Scott was just trying to start something... Its not like he grabbed Kessel and started pounding him. He turned away as soon as the other guys got involved.

If Warrener said that then he needs to get treated for post-concussion syndrome. That's the stupidest statement yet. I would be fascinated to hear his justification for it. Was Tropp some sort of star player that I wasn't aware of? Totally confused by this.

Rule 46.6) “No player may remove his helmet prior to engaging in a fight. If he should do so, he shall be assessed a two minute minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Helmets that come off in the course of and resulting from the altercation will not result in a penalty to either player.”
Got it confused with the OHL
The Ontario Hockey League has instituted a game misconduct and an automatic one-game suspension for players who remove their helmets or undo their chinstraps before or during fights.

He was saying that if you are going out there with the intent of starting something...go after a guy that matters to them and hope he gets turfed as well...(paraphrasing here) and in that line of thinking...it made sense.
Compounding the problem though is that Carlyle had Kessell out there at that time in a game that quite literally meant nothing. Strange move by him.
So there's one thing in this nobody is talking about...
This is a PRESEASON game. Nothing on the line, and no honour to be gained by pummeling a star player. 2 guys had a fight, one guy had the worse outcome. Nothing to see here...but oh wait, let's send out a guy who is trying to make the team and knows he needs to fight someone to do it. Stupid Buffalo coach. Carlyle doesn't want to escalate this because, again, it's a preseason game, so he sends out his stars with the intention of defusing the situation. Well he didn't have to send out his top player to send that message, just a less physical skilled line. Stupid Leafs coach. Still, John Scott goes and grabs the smallest guy who is their star player in an effort to get redemption for...something, I'm still not sure what. Stupid John Scott. Then Kessel freaks out and gives him an initial slash that isn't the end of the world, but then flat out attacks him from behind with his stick. Stupid Kessel. Then Clarkson jumps over the boards to defend Kessel, which seems honourable at first, but wasn't really necessary once Scott was contained. Stupid Clarkson.
Basically, the whole thing was a display of stupidity at its finest. All for a preseason game. Well done everyone.

Tropp is no angel. No one suggests he is, but he he was clearly out of his weight class. Give the guy credit. He took on a pure goon. He got his ass handed to him, but he still showed up. More than we can say for Kessel.

Wow, that video was really damning. Tropp got laid out and teammate took the guy out. Notice who got penalized. Also, the "two-hander" you mention was barely a tap. It wasn't like Kessel's Barry Bonds impersonation.
